Attn: sewing people...double needle? Hi sewing people, I recently bought a double needle, and I'm looking forward to using it on denim. I know it uses a zigzag stitch, and my machine has a preset for the stitch selection to use with it. My question is, how in the heck to you thread this thing? I would assume it uses another spool of thread. I'm supposing that is what the hole on top of my machine is for--attaching a spool holder, yes? Can someone tell me how to use this thing. Extra thread? Do I thread it trhough the same way as the regular thread? etc. Thanks! |
I can't help you here, my machine came with a double needle and I have never used it. Maybe Cindy knows. |

Double needle machines/stitches do not have a zig-zag, that is a cover stitch machine that is mainly used on knits. If you look at the hem of any t-shirt, you will see a zig-zag stitch on the inside only, a cover stitch machine was used. Double needle machines do not create a zig-zag, just two perfect single needle rows of stitching inside and out mainly used on woven/denim fabric. I am assuming you do not have a instruction manual, double needle machines do require double threading, and usually a heavier thread depending on what you are sewing… I am used to industrial machines, so I have no idea what is in the "regular" market right now.............. |
Hey Misty, I have a Janome machine and I use my double needles for pintucking and sewing hems on knits and jeans and sewing ribbon on clothing. You have to determine the width you need between the needles when using it for the ribbon. You can do a faux cover stitch for hems, but it takes quite a bit of practice and you are kind of sewing blind because the right side of the garment has to be facing the feed dog. I've done it a couple of times but not often enought to feel comfortable with it. Yes, you use two spools of thread and your machine should have a place for another spindle to fit. Thread it just like you would if it was one needle. Surfi and Ticki is right that it doesn't use the zigzag stitch. At least mine doesn't and that would be interesting to see! Hope that helps a little more. Susie |

My manual only shows where to set the stitch width (zigzag portion) for the double needle. It doesn't say that it needs the second spool of thread, though I figured it must because it didn't work with one thread! LOL. There is a hole on top, which I suppose a spool pin can be attached on, or I could put a wound bobbin on the bobbin winder (pics). Or...do I just attach two small spools on the same spool pin? |
