Reaction to Paxil My daughter started a script of Paxil yesterday afternoon. She took 1 40mg pill and a few hours later she started vomiting, her bp dropped, she was passing out and her arms & legs and face felt tingly and hot. SIL called 911 and ambulance took her to hospital (3am). The ER thought that she was having an allergic reaction to it. She was better by 6am and came home. Has anyone had something like this happen? PM me., Thanks. Jeanie |

Wow, she must really be allergic to something in it. Does she have other allergies? Hope she's doing ok now. I tried Paxil for awhile and didn't have that kind of reaction to it but did have some other kind of undesirable reactions and quit taking it. |
Thanks, She has asthma and is allergic to everything that grows or sheds. She is on Singulair & they took all her meds to the hospital with them. It triggered chest pains & a severe asthma attack also but that could have been from her anxiety. When I got to the house she was in the ambulance but they would not let me talk to her but they told her that I was at the house to stay with the kids. |
i take paxil for panic attacks. my mg is 20. 40 seems like a lot. they started me out slowly 5 then worked me up to 20. for the 1st two weeks i felt very dizzy, shaky and sick. it all went away after 2 weeks. i don't like taking it but my dr won't take me off of it since i still have minor panic attacks. i hope all is well with her now. if i had it all over again, i would not take paxil. i would take a medicine i only need to take when i feel panicy. paxil you have to take everyday no matter what. i do not like paxil at all. |
Oh my, they started you out at 5mg & you had reactions to that? No wonder she was in such rough shape. I just talked to her and she's feeling alot better, they gave her 2 iv's to help get it out of her system and told her it should wear off by this afternoon. I had panic attacks when I was in my 30's and the doctor tried Prozac for a few months. I didn't like that at all. I wish you the best. Thanks. |
How scary....glad to hear she's doing better this morning. The starting dosage for Paxil is 20 mg. |
I asked her about that yesterday. She said that the Dr wrote it for 40mg & told her to cut it in half for 5 days and then take the 40's. She forgot and the first one that she took was a 40. They are a coated tablet and it seems to me that cutting them would just release a full dose into your system instead of time releasing it. She's not going to take anymore and she'll call the office tomorrow. |
I had sort of a similar reaction but it specifically happened after I also left the doctors office and had just received breathing treatments so they werent sure what to blame. But it was paxil I was just recently put on and I had tingling and I got really light headed and blacked out at the post offfice, it was extremely embarrassing. I broke out in hives when they tried to put me on prozac. The doctor still doesnt think I was actually allergic to the medicine though, she thinks it was stress, so I dont really know |
Similar Paxil is an SSRI which is a Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor....., it has been so long since I sold into this market....gosh, I have taken these once or twice and absolutely vomit my guts out......did not have tingling though.... I sold in this market for 8 years, and some people, like your daughter and I are very sensitive to this type of medication. I tried a few different ones over the years and could never find one that did not make me sick....so guess what......I decided NOT to take them......but, I do understand and know that they work very well when taken slowly.....she probably should have had the pharmacist break the tablets for her at the pharmacy.......I cannot remember the usual starting dose....but SOME people still need to take less than the people in the clinical trials.....but, I do know a lot of people will try to tolerate the upset stomach because it usually goes away after a while......I just did not want to have to do that for a few weeks..... I agree your daughter needs to stop the meds until she sees her doctor.....it does sound like she may need something else...... Good luck |
Thank you all so much for the responses. I read them all to her and she's glad that she's not alone with the reactions. It's been a long night for all of us. It doesn't matter how old they are, it's frightening to see your child being loaded into an ambulance. |
When on Paxil I think your supposed to start small with mg. I started with 5 and increased . I think that it may just be the initial shock of the medication..and if you are feeling really stressed or panicked when you take the medication sometimes you can feel an adverse affect. I hope she is okay...make sure she eats before taking the pill...might help with nausea. I know that those pills; take a while to get used to. I felt tingles in my hands, feet, and face for 4 weeks after taking it at first. |
That sounds like a very high beginning dosage. My husband weighs 200 lbs and was started on 20mg once daily which he has now cut in half. I know this had to be very scary for you and your daughter. I also have suffered from panic attacks and the doctor prescribed Xanax which is taken only as needed and works very quickly...I never leave home without one in my pocket or purse. |
