Study tips anyone? I am having the hardest time studying much less remembering what I am reading.. anyone have any good study tips or memory tricks? |
mnemonic phrases or associations ... You put the needed info into a code, a poem or a short list. One of my favorite examples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F_tT-q8EF0 |
It may seem really elementary, but use flash cards.. it works great for definations and terms. Also, for something with processes or steps, think of random sentences to help remember them. :D |
ya i recommend flashcards or what i do is write down whatever i need to memorize endlessly until i memorize it.. not just like writing without thinking but writing it and saying it in my mind.. hope that helps you! |
What specifically are you studying? If you need to comprehend and remember what you read, try keeping a reading log or journal. Write the information down in YOUR OWN WORDS. And look up EVERY word or phrase you don't know. It will make a huge difference in your ability to understand what you read. Study in short sessions. Research has proven that you retain the most information the first ten to 15 min. of studying. If you can tell or teach someone else about your topic, it will help. As strange as it sounds, teach it to your puppies. Sometimes I have to see it, write it, hear it and SAY it before I can remember it. If I think of anything else, I will let you know. I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night! LOL I also teach high school English when I'm not mommying my Yorkie. |
Hey! Our pups have the same name! Cool!:aimeeyork |
Depends on what you're studying - is it pure memory type stuff? If yes, flash cards work great - I couldn't live w/ out them in nursing school. |
I would use a tape recorder. Put it on tape and listen while relaxing or taking a shower or before I went to bed and especially while driving in the car. Good luck. |
two   for flashcards and memory games with the letters of words. |
I've heard that if you eat tuna WHILE you're studying, then have peanut butter a few hours before your exam or w/e you're studying for it will help. The chemicals in the tuna will help your brain convert the messages into a long-term memory. The chemicals in the peanut butter will release your memory for use. It makes sense, but I haven't tried it. A girl in my class said she tried it & she got a better mark than her usual...but she's not the most reliable source lol |
When I was cramming for my Master's Degree exams, I recorded my notes on CD's, then played them in the car while commuting to and from work. I also played them at night as I was falling asleep, and during the day at home while doing housework. Eventually, most of the info stuck! Best suggestion I have is not to study too much. Study an hour, then break for a few hours. And never, never, never cram the night before an exam. Take a long walk, eat a good meal, no alcohol and get a good sleep. |
Rewrite notes that you have taken in class...Write things down in your own words...Do practice problems. Good luck!! |
this is on BIOLOGY... It is absoulutly my worst subject next to math..... hope this helps clarify |
thanks guys for your suggestiosn... i do the tape recorder system alot ... helps a bit but I will try everything else....i just have the worst memory in the world and I am in my 20's ..... geish! interesting theory with the tuna and peanut butter... |

What exactly in biology? I had Anatomy/Bio this year in university, I might be able to help a bit. I'm no expert, but I got good marks. I have 2nd year microbiology this year :( :thumbdown Starts in September and I'm already freaking out a bit. |
It's much easier to remember something when you understand the concept. Try rewriting your notes and reading them over repeatedly until you "get it." :) I loved biology :) |

That's what I do for everything!! It helps to see it in your own writing. Also, if there's something you're having a really hard time remembering, draw something special beside it (something funny would probably work best) and you'll remember that then remember what it says. |
Haha! It's funny the little tricks we use to remember things...During tests, it was as if I could actually see my notes in my head and where they were on the page...LOL |

Me too! I'll be thinking to myself "okay..it's right there, bottom right hand corner, there's a picture right above it - now what does it say!?" lol |
I guess it depends on what you're studying. I know when I was taking my History courses (which I don't care for), I first tried reading a little at a time, taking notes, etc. I found that by the end of the week (test time), I had forgotten most of it. So, I changed my strategy. Keep in mind, this was an internet course. I would set aside an entire weekend, get up Saturday morning and read, take notes, use study guides, etc. and then take the test immediately. I found that I did much better that way. Good luck to you. Hang in there. You'll be glad you perservered! |

rewriting it out twice had it really sinking in, and making it into shorthand that made sense to me really really made in sink in. Good Luck!! |
