I use the Non-floating cedar mulch (it isn't suppose to wash away or move around in the heavy rains). I like cedar because it helps repel bugs. The pine bark nuggets were always a favorite until it drew in bugs...roaches, ants, even termites (yuck). There are some new products out, like shredded recycled plastics/tires that help retain water and repel bugs and keep weeds down. With most products like that (the "green" recycled, etc products) they are normally higher, but they are better, I guess.
Happy Gardening!!! | Thanks everyone for your posts. Glad to hear feedback on the newspapers and shredded papers being tilled in. Daughter got product in North Carolina from Costco and she said it is mulch like product made from tires, she said it works great. Something new out, she put it all around her flower beds, the product isn't yet availeable here in Calif. I tilled and tilled this garden area up and put all the amendments into the earth so hopefully it will do good. I also put that weed fabric down and I think that will definately help with a weed free garden. I have put green beans, peas, zuchinni, crookneck squash, meal size bush pumpkins, lots of tomatoes, six kinds of bell peppers, cucumbers, radishes, onions, honey dew melons, cantalopes. Plus a 200 strawberry plant patch that I put in for Jack. The only veggie I won't put in is corn, been there done that, after the pickings the stock :( Real tough stuff to get out.
Vi, your green beans looked great and those tomatoe dishes all sound YUMMY. Each of my tomatoe plants are circled with a chicken wire round and I put clear plastic around that, I buy the chicken wire in the wide width rolls at Lowe's or Home Depot, I found this helps to hold moisture in and gives it a green house effect. I most likely will do it with some other of the veggies. It gets so hot here and very little rain so I find doing this really helps.
Isn't it great to have a garden. Everything has, FLAVOR and real TASTE, I find store bought veggies tasteless, also they loose the nutritional values.
Someone mentioned putting up pickles, have you done the bread and butter pickles soaking in Rock Salt and Ice overnight prior to putting them up. Jack loves them like that so that is how I always did mine. Every bite into one is a SNAP :) If anyone wants the recipe for them I will post it here for you. |
