Cold remedies? I called in sick for the first time in about two years. My throat is hoarse, I've got a cough, I'm sneezing and my sinuses are clogged. I'm going to go to the store and get some stuff for homemade chicken soup like mama used to make, but can anyone suggest a good over the counter medication? |

Get yourself a Neti Pot, some good non-iodized salt and rinse out those sinuses. Will make everything feel better!!!! A teeny (and I mean TEENY) drop of peppermint oil on a Q-tip and then in each nostril will help, too!! |

I like zican |
Sutafed (sp?) is the only thing that helps me. |
Sorry you are sick!!! Hope you get well soon! My DH has had a bad bout of this cold/flu stuff that's been going around. Those doctors had put him on so many different things.....he had to go to the doctor 3 times!!! This is a man who NEVER goes to the doctor! Anyway, one of the things the doctor told him (which, who would have thought) is to eat yogurt. There was a specific bacteria he said to look for, but I think most yogurt has it in it. Anyway, he said that most people don't realize it, but a lot of colds, etc are caused by "unhappy stomaches". Since my DH hates the thought of eating yogurt, the doctor said that there is a supplement out there that is this good bacteria. Saline nose spray is a must! If you don't want to mix your own and sniff it, just go by some cheap ol saline spray at the store. It works! Got any moonshine?? My grandfather swears by that stuff.....yes, there is still some of it out there! But, Jack Daniels would work just fine. Mix you a hot toddie (lemon, honey, whiskey)...those combined really work. I think it is disgusting, but hey..... REST!!! You really need to rest......sleep if you can......the doctor couldn't stress that enough! |

Have you had headaches yet? I have a constant dull ringing in my ears and my brain seems to move 5 seconds after the rest of me... |
Thanks for all your tips! I've carefully weighed all your advice and conferred with the pharmacist. And I've decided to follow Jenn218's grandfather's advice and drink some Jack Daniels! No headache. The pharmacist recommended Benadryl, so I'm gonna try that, chicken soup, liquids, yogurt -- and Jack Daniels. Oh, almost forgot: I think Eddie needs the Benadryl too! He's all excited thinking Dad's staying home from work, but I just wanna snooze. He's driving me nuts. |
Oh Eddie, come on over here and play with us while Dad rests. My mom swears by whiskey and honey for any ailment :) Maybe that explains a lot about me! HAHAHAHA I hope you feel better soon~ |
I like to get the packs that have NyQuil meds for both Day and Night. I usually get the Walgreen brand that are less expensive but just as effective. Hope you feel better. |
Poor Mike, I hope you feel better soon. I'd have some of that soup, before you hit the Jack Daniels. You don't need a upset tummy too. :p :p :p :p :p :p (DayQuil & NyQuil works great for colds;) |
What's that stuff that grandpa used to fix for us when we had a sore throat?? Hot tea with whiskey, honey & lemon??? Maybe he was just trying to knock me out so he could have some peace & quiet. |
Eeek! Don't spread you germs on us!!!! - Just kidding... You must be really sick not to have gone to work! Hope you feel better really quick! PS: Moonshine is better for colds than JD! |

Mike, since you have the Jack Daniels, make yourself a hot toddy -- It really helps --good whiskey, fresh lemon juice and honey. Get in a hot bath (hot tub would even be better) and toss down the toddy. You will be feeling better in no time :) |
That's what it's called: Hot Toddy thanks Chattiesmom |
btw -- Mike this hot toddy recipe was recommended tomy tee-totaling mom by a doctor when I was critically ill with double pnemonia. Of course this all happened about the same time that penicillin was first being used and there weren't a lot of fancy meds....I just added the hot bath for good measure. :) |

I'm with the toddy's. My dad makes me tea, 2 teaspoons honey, squirt lemon juice and about inch bourbon. I sleep for about a day to a day 1/2 and then good as new. |
Take 1 cup moonshine, mix with 1 cup honey, 1/2 cup squeezed lemon juice, and about 3 pieces of peppermint candy. Mix together well and SIP as needed for your throat. It'll soothe your throat and clear your sinuses! (Or maybe you just won't care):) |
Moonshine? We don't have many still's in Michigan. Is it good? What does it taste like? Is it used for "medicine" like whiskey is up north here? Will it cure a stuffy cold or make it so you don't care that you have a stuffy cold? Hey Mike, are you feeling better yet??? |
Honey, stills are alive and well in the South:p I have someone who brought me a quart about a year ago and it's just now getting "ripe". Whenever anyone gets sick at the office, they always ask me if I have any "medicine":) I only make this mixture with it, so I can't really tell you how it tastes, but you can make pretty much the same thing with rye whiskey. Make sure you use fresh lemons though, it's just not the same with bottled lemon juice. It really does soothe your throat and clear your sinuses, though. Give it a try with the whiskey and let me know what you think. |
Thank you so much for the information. I remember when I was young..ok, 50 yrs ago, alot of people around here made home made wine; cherry, banana, rhubarb, dandelion. It would take your breath away & they gave it to us for colds......I think I feel a cold coming on this afternoon...I'll let you know. Right now I'm having my second "Mojito Julep" waiting for the Derby. |

The julep sounds great! 50 doesn't sound too bad, either. I'll be the big 5 0 in August:) :p |
Maybe it is allergies since it is spring. I would try some claritin. That would dry up the drainage that is making your throat sore and sinus drainage. |
