Attn: all sewers (as in sewing, not sewage LOL) I have a question for all of you who sew: I've been selling my dresses and harnesses to some of the people in my community. I just got a request for a harness for a girl with a Jack Russell Terrier. She's 12 lbs. There's no problem with making one that size; my only fear is the D-ring for a dog this size. I'm afraid they'd be strong for pulling. I told her my concern, and she said she didn't think it would be a problem. These are closed with velcro. My 1 1/2" velcro is pretty strong, but I'm wondering if anyone else has made one for a dog this size. What do you think? |
Tinka is 8+ lbs and I had her out in a hoodie with a d-ring and she pulled and it came flying off. I wouldn't trust her again with a d-ring on clothing. But then again, that's just Tinka... |
Yes, I have made for dogs that big. Use 4-5 inches of velcro length if you feel you need to and reinforce the d ring with extra layers of fabric. You can also make sure your liner is a nice quality thick liner, twill is great. Also never use a fabric that is stretchy as in t shirts or fleece fabric hoodies for harnesses. They stretch and do not hold d rings or your dog in the outfit securely. It is terribly unsafe. That's terrible that happened to you Omega. |

Omega: I've had Chloe pull right out of another velcro harness, but it had only about 1 1/2" square of velcro. Was the hoodie a knit fabric? I stay away from knits...I don't really like sewing with them much anyway. |
I have some really strong velcro that is two inches.I could send you enough to do this, let me know. |

I use 2" wide velcro(on the chest) on any dogs 7+ pounds and I use at least 4 inch long strips on the belly. I do not recommend sewing the d-ring down with ribbon or anythign thin like that, use a sturdy thick piece of fabric that has been folded at least 3 times and reinforce the stitch to the back lining. You could even use nylon webbing to sew the d-ring, that woudl be really strong. My 8lb chi wears my harnesses adn Ive never had a problem. One of the seamstresses that works for me has a 15 lb rat terrier and a 20lb boston terrier and they wear the harnesses we make and havent had any problems. |
I just want to add- I use 1.5 " wide velcro on the neck, at least 3 inches long |
