Sewing sites/hints/tips/tricks? Hi all, I LOVE to sew by hand. I've never used a machine, but have always wanted to learn. Well, a EuroPro macine was on sale for $89.99 at a hardware store in town so I broke down & bought it a few days ago. I'm finally gonna take it out of the box & test it out tomorrow, does anyone have any good teaching sites or hints/tips/tricks to share? My main project will, of course, be doggie dresses (I have a super simple pattern) :) Thanks :) |

Practice....read the book that came with it, get comfortable with threading and get some scrap material and try the stitches on it to find those that you'll be using the most. How exciting, a new machine. Mine was new in 1973 and just won't quit. Just one other thing: If you sew through your finger, try not to faint before you back the needle out, cut the thread and put a bandaid on it. I'm not being funny, I've done it 3 times in 30 years. Usually I make it to the bandaid part before I pass out. |

All 3 times I was sewing on vinyl or waterproff material & it was a rubbery texture. I've made tents, motorcycle covers & sew alot of upholstery material for cushions. |

I've got the thing out of it's box lol it's staring at me right now  I've got 3 pieces of scrap fabric from Wal-Mart (two nice to try the doggie dress) and 1 not-so-nice so I'll use the not-so-nice one to try the stiches. LOL I'll be okay w/ the no fainting (nurse here...seen wayyyyyyy worse lol), but I may be too much of a weenie to take the needle out and everything myself. Maybe I'll only sew when my boyfriend's here LOL |
I have only been sewing since Oct of 2006. All I can say is practice practice practice. My friend taught me a few tricks but for the most part I just try different things. Good luck! |
I'm totally self taught, and books and patterns did not help me whatsoever, so my best advice is just to experiment. I went through 50 harnesses/dresses that looked like crap before I tweaked the patterns I created myself and learned some new tricks. Good luck in your sewing, it's addicting! |

You're welcome sweetie. I found it to be very helpful as well. I love that they have videos. Sometimes you have to see it get done rather than just reading instructions. Enjoy! |
