My husband got bit by a snake!!
 

I can't believe I'm writing this; it seems so unreal that this actually happened last night.

My husband was bit by a snake. He was working at his shop (as always), and there's a field right by the building. This little tiny snake came slithering in, and my husband, thinking he was Jeff Corwin or something, tried picking the thing up by it's tail, and tossit outside! Well it just zoomed around and got him right on his thumb nuckle. Luckily, his buddy, Robert was there, and thankfully he was quick thinking and acting! Robert caught the snake in a tubberware container. Donald's (my hubby) hand was swelling and he was obviously in serious pain. Robert took the snake and Donald to the hospital a couple miles away. Ends up it was a baby rattler, but it only has this little hard thing on the end of the tail that's called a 'button', no rattle yet. Come to find out they have the full venom of an adult. Donald had thought it was a gardner snake, or something because there was no rattle. The only thing that saved him was it got him in a bony part of the hand, so the fangs didn't sink all the way in to release all the venom it had. And of course Robert's quick and calm response! Whew!

The hospital admitted him, and at this point we're waiting for the Dr to come by examine and release him. He says he feels kinda weak and nausated, but besides that fine. The nurse said he'd feel tired and flu-like for the next few days. And I don't think he'll ever touch a snake (that he doesn't know - our son has a ball python) again!

OMG! How lucky he is!! Sounds surreal doesn't it?? Happy to hear it didn't turn serious and good thing his buddy was with him!
On that note...I will be driving in the motorhome to Oklahoma in July...are snacks that common?? I'll have my girls!! I've heard about tarantulas and scorpions already :eek:

omg. that is so scary. we have rattlers here in nevada too, i always worry about my dogs and kids. glad he is ok.

how upsetting!!!!!!! i am glad he is going to be alright.

OMG !! :eek: :eek: I don't know what to say - I've never known anyone who even has the guts to handle a snake let alone a rattler .....holy cow is he a lucky lucky man. I'm so glad he's going to be ok. WOW.

Wow! Thank god he was with someone who reacted quickly and got the snake! I glad he is going to be ok !!!!!

O my! I hate snakes! I'm so glad to hear he is going to be ok and he had someone calm there with him.

You have one lucky husband! Thank heavens his buddy thought to catch
the thing in a container and take it with them to the hospital so they could identify it.

I am so glad he will be fine. It could have been a real tragedy.
Rattle snakes are indeed poisonous:eek:

Goodness -- he was fortunate it was not worse -- but probably hard for him to feel real lucky right now, as sick as he is. We have pigmy rattlers here in NW Florida -- they can be misleading too. I think I live in the midst of a high volume snake community. We are always fnding them in the pool or curled up on the porch. Cottonmouth, copperhead, diamond back rattlers and the little pigmy rattlers -- seems more poisonous than non. But that is Florida for you!

I didn't think they were that common. I thought they avoided people; at least I've never seen one in the wild. We've been out hiking before, and my dad has said stuff like "Hear that noise, I think that's a Rattler." But honestly, I thought it sounded more like an insect. Now I've seen a lot of garner snakes; and actually I'm wondering if maybe some of the ones with black and gray designs weren't garner snakes at all, but something else. . . the green ones I'm pretty sure were garners. Anyway Donald says that that's what the snake looked like one of those black and gray designed garner snakes we see periodically.

When you have your doggies out just make sure it's has well groomed lawns, and people walk around there regularly (I personally always avoided long grass because I had heard stories as a kid of somebody (you know the unspecified 'somebody') stepping on a snake and getting bit before).

We are pretty sure the baby came from the huge field next door. It's just a big area with long grasses, trees, and it's up against a little wooded area; also a little natural creek runs back there and extends past my hubby's shop building. No one ever goes over there; so who knows what's making it's home there.

I was pretty freaked out last night, but now I'm just like, "You know NEVER to pick up a snake." I guess since my son has a pet snake then hubby thinks he's a expert. Or I should say thought he was an expert.

The nurse said the Dr. would be here by 11a.m. At this point we are just hanging out waiting (thank goodness for HiWi, lol). I really want to lay down on this couch in here, but I'm afraid I'll pass out and will be groggy or asleep when the Dr. comes by, and I really want to talk to him, and also get Donald released.

I just can't believe something like this actually happened; you read about it in the papers, but you just don't expect to ever be the one experiencing something like this. Also, thank goodness for family, when Robert called me from the hospital after 10p last night. Mom came right over, and stayed the night with the kids, and got them off to school. My parents are picking them up for me today, and keeping them the night.

I already posted but now that things are looking better I'll say this....I think he needs to be grounded from watching any more animal planet....:D

I hope he has no repercussions from this...did they say what to expect in the future besides flu symptoms ? he'll make a full recovery then ??

That was just too close for comfort. He had a couple nice things on his side that day, one being the snake only bit the knuckle bone, the second is having a quick thinking friend on hand. If those two things had been different then he may have been in a very serious condition.
Now you can brush up on all your nursing skills and pamper him when he comes home. ;)
