Tried to steal credit card I just got a call from my credit card company. Someone tried to use it without my authorization. They tried to order a computer on line & it was a computer company called Foeniks. I went on line to check it out & it's in a different language. The credit card company cancelled my card & is issuing me a new one. The charge was made today for $2479.89. Thank God it didn't go through. I wonder who got access to my card? I have it in my safe. They are filing a report so they can try & find out who got a hold of my numbers. We have been having a few problems with our PC the last couple of days. Hopefully someone didn't hack into it. I have read that some companies have had information stolen from customers. I do know it was from no one I know. What next? |
Oh wow:eek: Glad they caught it in time. have you used your card at any resturants latley? they can write down your cc# there? I hope you find out who did this |
Since they issued you a new credit card, they will investigate. You can sit back and sigh with relief that you don't have to pay the amount back. Anyone can get your credit card information anywhere. They can copy it from a receipt or even when you give orders over the phone. I have fraud protection on my Amex, and i'm glad i do. :) I'm glad you're not responsible for the charges. |
wow scary........ glad they called u!! |
My mom and Dad are going through this same thing. Just about a month or so ago, someone called thier house and told them they wanted to verify a purchse made over the internet and asked to speak to my dad. He was at work so my mom got the guys number and called him. Dad said he didn't order anything and called this guy up. Come to find it out, someone had stolen his card number and had been making purchases on it for a couple of months. Of course my mom is 65 and takes care of the bills, and she didn't really look at the statements when they came, she just paid them and went on. Needless to say, my dad went back and looked on the statements and there were dozens of charges but none for big amounts. He got the names of the charges and called to see if I could look them up for him and see what type of place they were made to. All of them were to websites about business deals and online businesses as well as an email fraud protection service! I called and spoke to one guy for my dad and he told me the email address used to order and it was almost identical to my dad's except they had used one letter diffrence and added a number. So we don't know how that happened but this person had his name, card number, "email address", address, and all!! The credit card company did cancel the card and issued him a new number. Some things on the card were currency exchages in Australia. Believe me, I know what you are going thru! |
That's scary! I'm glad that they weren't able to use it! Definitly check your credit records and make sure nothing else was stolen. |
I check my statements every month. This is the 1st time anything like this has happened. I don't use that one at restaurants because it has such a high limit. I never use it on line either. The only place I use it is, it's on file at Lee transportation service. I use it for toll charges & my transponder usage for the year. Now that it is cancelled, I'll give them a card with a lower amount value. I'm just glad I have fraud protection. |
Oh my gosh, pipersmommy!!! That's so scary :( Something similar happened to me recently. |
2 years ago my son received his credit card bill and it was for about 18,500......so up on further investigation he realized someone had cashed one of those checks that comes with your bill......and NO ONE questioned it......the check was written out for 15,500. well they finally straightened it out.......a few short months later.......I got a call on a Sunday for a card I had NOT even received in the mail yet.......that someone was making purchases.....for about 750. I was like "I applied for the card but I never even got it" that was resolved too........so consider yourself lucky that they caught it before they got to spend your hard earned money |
Wow, how scary indeed!! |
When you check out of a hotel/motel, never give back that card. It has your CC # address, email and all on it. Anyone can scan into it till that room is actually given to someone. Also when you give your card to a wait staff at any resturant, they can actually take it and copy off your card info. |
I always watch the cashier when I buy something with a credit card. A couple of years ago, when i was going through teenage rebellion and was in bad company, A "friend" showed me something that he uses to make extra cash aside from his retail job. There is this little black box thing that people use to swipe CC and it holds all your information including the numbers and stuff and usually the cashiers or who ever working the register swipes your CC with the black box and then swipes it again using their legitimate machine and gets paid based on how many CC they swiped and how many numbers they can actually read off the box. The customers usually don't pay attention when they give them their credit card and If the customers asked why he swiped the card twice, he would say sorry, security measures and they wouldn't question further. of course that was a couple of years ago, and i'm sure technology has advanced since but always keep an eye on your CC when you pay for things. |
Oh my goodness !! that's s0o0o0o very scary to hear !! i'm sowie that you went through that !! :( |
Beware of Pfishing too! There are MANY pfishing scams online. You get this very official email saying your account will be closed without update information, or it says you ordered something and they are confirming, or it looks like it is from ebay or paypal ...... what they are really doing is sending you to a scam site (that looks just like the real one) where they will trick you into either entering account or personal information ... or ... they will get a cookie planted on your computer to harvest account numbers when you type. If you get an email from a bank, credit company, ebay, paypal, etc.... make sure it is addressed to your actual name (not dear ebay member, etc). Do not click on the link in the email -- instead go to the site with the address you already know or get from a google search. If you buy online, you have probably already received many of these scams. Be careful! |
Oh wow! Some people have nooooooooo morals! |
