Anyone with a metal roof? We're thinking of putting a metal roof on our cabin. Does anyone have one? If so can you tell me the pros and cons of it? They say if you use the fanfold material underneath it acts as a sound barrier and it stands up to strong winds and hail with no trouble. Any advice out there? |
Not me but I love the way they look |
Yes, I do too but I'm wondering about the noise and we get a lot of wind off of the lake so I'm wondering how it will hold up. |
Check with your insurance agent before you buy - you may qualify for a discount on your homeowners insurance if you buy an approved one! |

Yes, they do look nice. If we do the house we'll also do the boat dock and the summer kitchen we're planning to build. |
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww........a summer kitchen! <drifts off into day dream land> Now that sounds like it's right up my alley! Cooking outside!?!?!?! |
You bet! We cook out all year long...just brush the snow off the grill and fire it up! We have a huge front deck that goes down to a big concrete patio so we're planning to tear up the old patio, put in new concrete and build a screened in summer kitchen. We love to sit outside but right now we can't if it's raining so a screen room would be great. So...the metal roof has to be the same on all 3 buildings...I just have to match! |
That is so cool! Once the kids are out of college!!! hee hee I like to camp just so I can cook on an open fire. Nothing like fried chicken in a cast iron skillet on an open fire. *sigh* :) |

Fom the time I was 17 until I married at 27, I lived in with my parents in a house that we built that had a metal roof. It was so wonderful. When it rained it was music -- when it hailed it sounded like a million squirrels having an acorn tossing contest :D About insurance -- one major company, I believe it was State Farm  would not insure a log house with a metal roof. At the time there was not a fire station within the "magic 5 miles" and we were told that the metal roof would prevent the fire from blowing through the room and the house would burn to the ground  . |
Hmmm...I'll have to ask my agent. I love the sound of the rain on a metal roof but I could do without the hail! |

We just had the most incredible wind storm here. The devastion was incredible not something we are used to seeing. My metal roof held up just fine no problems, while the shingle and tile roofs were all over the place. Not to mention the trees. It looked like a tornado went through. You do hear the rain but it is not bad, however watch our for the snow when it decides to come off. The snow comes off in sheets, but you know, at least its not sitting on the house needing to be pulled off because of the weight. I am a tax pro. dbl check before you start. I will try and print out what we were given from the IRS and send it to. I will do this after Tues. |
Thank you! Yes, I've seen the snow slide off of a metal roof and it does come down in pretty big sections. The way our home sits it would slide off of the front or the back, not the sides, and if it did come off of the back it wouldn't matter...but the front could be an issue. I saw in the book that they have something that is supposed to help with that...I'll have to look again to see what it was. The tax credit would be a nice bonus but it's not why we would be doing it. The roof we have really should be replaced because it's old and it looks like it has 3 layers of shingles  and we have a log cabin so a metal roof would look nice. We could add a ridge vent and do away with the noisy attic fan and twice as noisy vent cover...that thing catches the wind and scares the life out of you in the middle of the night! |
No direct experience but the folks down here on the Gulf coast are going crazy for metal roofs. They are supposed to hold up to hurricanes a lot better than the shingles. Everyone I have talked to loves them so far. Some look like metal roofs but some look amazingly like conventional roofs. I also hear they can save on A/C costs. If we lose one more roof, I think we will go to metal too. Hoping for a quiet hurricane season though! |
