omg how could ANYONE do this!?!!?!??!? Father arrested for allegedly beating infant daughter Story Published: Apr 10, 2007 at 10:44 AM PDT By Bryan Johnson A 3-month-old girl is in serious condition after being severely beaten Monday night, and police have arrested the girl's 22-year-old father who they believe is responsible for the assault. Police call the beating almost incomprehensible. The little girl's grandfather, Patrick Smith saw 3-month-old Ganessa at Tacoma's Mary Bridge Children's Hospital, where she is in serious condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. "She looks like two softballs who have been totally beaten with bats," Patrick Smith said. "That's what she looks like. Swollen, black and blue." Police reports say Hanning squeezed the girl's rib cage for five to 10 minutes, shook her, and threw her to a bed. The little girl bounced off the bed and her head hit the floor. The reports say doctors found several skull fractures, broken ribs and possible damage to the liver. Detectives say it happened at Hanning's home just outside Port Orchard. Deputy Scott Wilson with the Kitsap County Sheriff's Department says the baby's mother left the girl with the father Monday and when she returned in the evening, she found the child hurt and rushed the child to an urgent care facility in Port Orchard. Doctors there recognized the severity of the baby's injuries and had her taken by ambulance to Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma. Once there, hospital staff contacted Kitsap County sheriff's deputies noting the nature of the injuries. Originally, Jason had told police he was sleeping on the couch while Ganessa was on his chest, and she fell and was injured. Neighbors we talked to called that story reasonable. "I really don't think he would hurt that baby for any reason, he loves that kid," Angie Rench told KOMO 4 News. Neighbor Ward Garrison agreed: "I just had dinner over there three nights ago. Everything seemed like a normal family; Mom and baby and friends. I held her and fed her a bottle it was like normal, everything was normal." But detectives say Monday night, everything apparently was not normal. The family dog recently had pups, they were inside whining, and the baby was crying. "He basically admitted he lost it and severely assaulted the child in a most severe fashion," said Deputy Wilson. "That's almost beyond compression." In a Port Orchard courtroom Tuesday, Jason looked calm as a judge set bail at $500,000. Smith said he wished he had a shotgun. "That's how I feel. I wish I had the ability to do that like in the old days," Smith said. "But today you can't do that. Yeah I'm upset, that's my granddaughter. She's three months old. Three months and one week." Hanning is scheduled to be back in court Thursday. He faces possible chargers of 1st degree assault. |
