I think we saved the Easter Bunny!
 

Yesterday, my neighbor stopped by with her large dog to visit. She's a sweet standard poodle mix and gets a long really well with the yorks. Okay, so we're all in the fenced back yard, it's cold, but the dogs are running around having a grand old time. When suddenly, neighbors dog starts digging in the mulch and the next thing we know, she's loping around the yard happy as can be with an incredibly loud squeaking noise coming from inside her mouth:eek:

Needless to say we freaked, I made the yorkies go in the house and gave my neighbor a hotdog (something we were hoping she'd give up her prize for).

Well, she dropped her new toy the minute she saw the hotdog...

it was a tiny little baby bunny. Poor thing was scared to death but didn't seem hurt in any way. She (he?) started trying to crawl away, while my neighbor leashed her dog and left.

What to do now???? Now that the nest had been exposed, I can't let the yorkies, my other dog, or the cat (who likes to hang out in the fenced yard with us) anywhere near it. Plus the poor little guy was way to far away from the nest to ever get back on its own (and I was afraid to touch it and give it my human scent.)

Well, my neighbor came back with a small spade and very gently scooped her up and placed her back with her siblings. DH came home and built a temporary fence around them (with access for the mommy bunny but not the yorks) and we crossed our fingers.

Today, I looked out my window and saw the mommy bunny (I think) sitting near the nest area inside the makeshift fence. Yaaaay.

So, hopefully, a happy ending.

You DID save the easter bunny !! Most of the time they don't live thru that and good thinking with the hotdog !! lol - Happy Easter and that was such a cute story and I'm glad the baby bunny made it

Well, I think because the dog is so big (she's really a gentle giant) there was plenty of room in her mouth for the bunny, and she was obviously mouthing it gently.

Of course, last year Ginger and Fun Kitty got ahold of a nest, and that DID NOT turn out well. I actually had trouble getting over that and forgiving Ginger (somehow I expected that from the cat).

Wish these bunnies would STOP making nests in a fenced yard full of loose "hunters"!

So glad to hear it had a happy ending!! We occasionally have bunnies in our yard also...I still get creeped out when I think of the time a mom bunnie put her babies in a tiny hole in the ground w/ some dried grass over the top.. I mowed the grass & ran right over the hole :eek: ...I didn't see it till I was coming back on the next strip...all was well w/ the babies but it really gives me the creeps thinking how lucky they where. Mom bunnie moved them the next day...

Thank heavens you were watching them. I'm always worried about what mine will find in the yard. I know we have moles and mine are constantly digging for them.
