mystery animal in my chimney! Ok.. for weeks ive heard squeaking coming from my chimney.. so i call the animal control people because i thought it was rats! well they came & looked into my chimney and they found a whole family of racoons! i live in Miami, so my chimney is never used but i didnt think RACOONS WOULD MOVE IN! well i told them to take them out and they said that if they did, theyd have to euthanize them. w/e i said fine, and then they pulled this baby racoon at of my chimney! it looked at me with these beady ADORABLE little eyes, it kinda looked like a puppy, I COULDNT DO IT! w/e they dont make much noise & they dont bother me, in fact, ive never even seen any racoon in my neighborhood, so should i just leave them be? the entire neighborhood has animal proof trashcans sooo they are probably just eating garbage thats laying around, and thats good right? i dunno.. did i do the right thing? but u shouldve seen this baby! im serious it was CUTE! |
Racoons are cute but very mean little animals. They could have been infected with rabies you don't want to take a chance and have something terrible happen. Better safe than sorry. |
Oh what a question!!!!!! Well after looking in those sweet little eyes, I'd leave them alone. Make sure you put a screen in the chimney so they can't get in the house. Maybe a little bowl of food and fresh water for the parents. Oh heck, I'll say it, I'm a softy when it comes to Gods furbabies, I love them all! (just as long as their cute, and not the yucky bug kind) Best of luck to ya!;) |
Do you have a cold air return through your chimney into your attic space? If so they can get in there, they can also (possibly) end up in your house if the flu is open. They will poop all over your attic and it ain't pretty! We had a family of raccoons in the attic of one of the homes we bought and they ran and played so much they actually shook and rattled the ceiling fan! See if you can get someone to use a live trap and relocate them...once they're gone you'll need to get a chimney cover put on so they can't get back in. A chimney cover is simply some heavy screen/wire material made to fit over the top of the chimney and secured in place with metal strapping. |
I have good news :) i called a wildlife sanctuary/rehabilitation in the everglades, they said they didnt have enough funds to take in more animals, especially as common as racoons, sooo i gave them a hefty donation and they are coming to pick up the family tomorow. What they do is that they'll take the racoons, vacinate them/tag them and then they will evaluate them. Some racoons are used to the wild but some have been sooo used to eating out of trashcans ect.. they are seen as a "danger" to people so they cant be released. Those, they keep those in these big fenced in enclosures. :D im pretty happy about this. Although i hope this family isnt too big because im paying 100$ per racoon.. lol w/e but i cant have these lil guy's deaths on my consience & i also dont want to wake up one day and find them scurrying around my living room |

I couldn't have had them put to sleep. I probably would have just blocked the fireplace so they couldn't get in the house and I would have fed them. LOL I would never have gotten rid of them then...duh! I never would have thought to do what you did...way to go! Kim |
