Maya my Pom may have Cushings Disease
 
I took Maya to thew dermatology specialist today and she thinks she has Cushing's Disease. She has been treated for Thyroid disease but her hair loss and skin problems are getting worse. She has to have an 8 hour test on Monday. If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate anything you can tell me about how the treatment went. It sounds like the medicine can have alot of side effects. Please keep her in your prayers. Monday is also her 10th Birthday. Thanks

I think the test is called a LDDST. When my Bichon went sick a year ago, initially they thought cushings, he was tested, but it was not conclusive.and it turned out he has diabetes only. Some of the symtoms are similar, but there is a lot more to it. I was on a forum that has lots of helpful people and all are owners of Cushings dogs. A lot of nice people over there with plenty of experience with their Cushings dogs and how they have managed it through medication. Poor Maya !! Sending her lots of get well wishes and I'm so sorry....I found this article on cushings - It's a year old - but there is a new treatment listed at the end ...maybe you could mention it to your vet ???

Thanks Villette that article was very understandable. The new drug they mention is one the specialist said has not gotten FDA approval here but you can get in England. She said something about having 1 or 2 places they can get it or havimg someone in England get it. I do have lots of family in ENgland so that may work out it need be. It does seem like the meds are pretty scary. I hope she dosen't end up having it but she has so many of the symptoms.

What symptons was Maya experiencing that made you decide to take her to the vet? I read the article on symptoms, but was wondering what Maya's were that alerted you. Thanks

Piper has been having a skin condition also. She goes in next week.

Maya had the 8 hour test on Monday her 10th birthday. When I went to pick her up the vet wanted to talk to me. She said they noticed he whole neck was badly bruised. I said the only thing I could think of was that last week she had her heartworm test done at the regulat vet and when the tech brought her back the vet noticed she was bleeding on her neck/throat area. He said thats where they took the blood for the heatworm test. He cleaned it up and I never really thouht about ir again. The dermatologist was relieved to hear that as they couldn't figure out why she was so bruised. She also mentioned that the blood draw they did on her foot was bruising now as well. So they did a clotting test on her to see why she is brusing so bad. She is losing more hair and I feel so bad for her. She has some symptoms of the cushings but I hope this test will help determine what is wrong with her. I have to wait until next week to get some results.
