Curiosity question ~ Why are some breeds more then others? Today, I was once again asked how much I paid for Percy. I get this question a lot, and even though I know he was on the low side of the scale for a Yorkie, peoples eyes bug out. Then I remembered. I didn't pay this much for other dogs that I had, and they were purebreed also. So I was cruising around google checking out the prices for different breeds. Why is it that a certain breed like a Yorkie or Chi will go for appox $1000 while another breed will only be $500 or less? Even though they are also a purebreed. I am not talking about a show dog, b/c I totally understand paying $$$$$$ no matter what the breed. I mean pet quality little ones. Is it b/c of size or popularity? If Chi's weren't so popular would they only be $100? I am just really curious as to what factors into the pricing of a puppy. Besides initial shots and whether or not it is show quality. |
I am sure many factors determine that. I remember when 101 dalmations movie came out.........every kid had to have one and the prices skyrocketed and they were in demand. When Taco Bell came out with their "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" commercial came out........everyone wanted a Chi When Nemo came out...........those cute little fish in the movies were everywhere and they weren't cheap and so on....... Also, yorkies and chi's are 'portable', lap dogs, suitable for apartment living, etc. More in deman equal higher priced. Now, many mixed breeds that should be free are more than some purebreds because they are "in" and celebrities have them...... Size of the litters are a factor too. It's never going to change......... |
I was also thinking about this recently. In my opinion it is totally about the popularity. It is kind of like buying a brand name bag. I'm not talking about the best quality leather kind which you could compare to a show quality dog. Im talking about a regular cotton bag. You could buy one for 50 bucks or for 300 bucks. It depends whether or not you want the brand. I dont know if that made any sense to anyone outside of my head. But i trully believe we are paying for the "Yorkie" name. Its a vicious cycle b/c since they are becoming more popular, they are becoming more expensive and that makes people think they are better....so more people want them, making them more popular and even more expensive. I have seen Yorkies go for well over 5,000....however i have yet to see any other breed go for that much. Interesting question..looking forward to seeing if anyone can explain it less confusing than i did. |
That is a good question I often wonder that myself.. I have to litters for sale..one for $600.00 and one litter for $850.00. I price my according to the sizes and akc or ckc reg. |

I agree with all the reasons given above and I also think inflation is another part of it. Everything flows and ties in with the economy. What use to be one price back in the day is now much higher. The dollar doesn't hold as much value as it use to and it's steadily decreasing in value. I say this because I notice the price is Doxies in the past few years has increased amongst the reputable breeders as well as many other "popular" breeds. |
I think it has to do with people's disposable income these days. Children and animals are big business these days. People have more disposable income and they are spending it, on themselves, their children and their animals (dogs). When I was growing up, we went out to eat (maybe) once a week, I didn't "hang out" at the mall,..(well, my late teenage years I did..malls were becoming the thing to do) and I wasn't bought a new toy every time we went somewhere. I don't even remember going out shopping all that much. I didn't watch TV, I played outside. Things have just changed and families have changed in the way they interact and how they spend their time and money. I think having these dogs, be they small or large it just an outgrowth of this. I cannot even image a "dog daycare" when I was younger, it is just another sign of the times, like the prices on Yorkies and other small dogs. |
I've had a couple of people ask how much I paid for Sophie and it always catches me off guard. Is there a nice way to respond without sharing your finances with the person asking? |
Today it seems that Yorkies (especially little tiny ones) have become a hot commodity. So with that expect higher prices. Supply and demand applies here. LOL |

I agree,but I have to also add that I have bred pugs and bichons in the past. Pugs having the most out of pocket expences,because they tend to have to have more c-cections (round heads like the bull dogs),yet the bichons are selling higher. This is of course only my opinion,but I think aside from champions and show dogs,People are asking higher prices just because people are willing to pay them. |

I overpaid on my pup and then spent over a grand to keep her alive since she had the typical "dog store stuff". I think some people have no other choice but pay what is being offered in their area. |
