Help I Can't Stop!!!! Biting my nails!!! I bite and bite non stop and even bite the skin till there's nothing to bite. I've been doing it since I can remember and have tried diff. things to stop. Anyone have any advice? It's gross...:( |
Have you tried the bitter tasting stuff you put on the nails, skin? It's like the stuff they put on babies thumbs to get them to stop sucking their thumb. That might help. Have you tried wearing gloves when you are at home? For me it is a stress thing, so reducing my stress helps a little bit. I am trying to stop picking at the skin around my nails and it is so hard to stop. I do it unconsciously so when I realize that I am doing it, I just make myself stop. I'm determined to break this bad habit. It has been about 4 months, and I still do it sometimes without thinking. But I am doing so much better. It takes willpower, but sometimes you just have to tell yourself, "I am NOT going to do this". Good luck! |
I do too. :embarasse I am always embarassed of my hands. I'd like to stop too and I do try but then I'll catch myself driving in my car spitting my nails out. I know GROSS!! |

my nails are so short. i have tried the stuff you put on the nails but i just chew it off lol! sorry chewing my nail is like being addicted to drugs or something i have to do it and if i dont then i dont know how to control my feelings or emotions |
Wear Latex Gloves in the house till you break the habit...and if you get bored - you could always play 'doctor' :D :D |
I don't know if this will help but you might try a manicure. I know..you have to have something to manicure! But...maybe if your nails and the skin around them looked nice and felt nice you wouldn't be tempted to pick/chew them. If you wear nail polish at all make sure you keep it chip free so you won't be tempted to pick...if you get a split or tear, correct it and keep your nails filed all the time. I don't wear nail polish...I use a buffer and cuticle oil...my nails are strong and the shine lasts for about a week before I have to do it again. For the rough skin around them use Neosporin and a bandaid at bedtime...you might be amazed at how quickly that stuff heals things...by the way...that's great to dab on blemishes at bedtime too! Even if your nails are short you can start taking care of them and that might make you want to make them even better. :) |
Fake nails are nice. Painting your nails every day (with the same shade, just one coat a day after the first two, not taking it off until it's so thick you can POP it right off your nail) helps too. 'Cause it tastes bad and after a few days, it gets stronger. I have to keep my nails short 'cause...if I don't they just bend and rip off. Especially when they get wet :(. But...now I've stopped bitin em. |
what made me stop this awfull habit, are acrilic, or gel nails. Trust me if you spend $40 or $50 to get your nails done, You'll be very cerfull with them. and once your own nails grow out, you have to get manicure done once a week. It's costy and time consuming, but beautifull hands are soooo worth it. |
I agree with the acrlyic nails! Up until 8th grade, I chewed mine off like you.. Went and got acrylics for 3 months and ALMOST quit.. I'd let them grow out and when one would break, I just chewed them all off.. 5 years later (freshman in college) I get my nails done faithfully and they look better than the real deal anyway... It's pretty cheap and my nails grow slow, so acrylics do wonders for me! Plus the doggies like 'em better cuz I give good scratches now... ;) And I've known the guy that does mine for 7 years... I've gone through almost every airbrush he has! lol |

i know im crazy! and fingernail polish i just chew off |
I have this same problem with my almost 13 year old daughter. We got her to break the habit one time when she was 4 by telling her that I would paint her fingernails for a wedding that she was going to be in IF she could stop biting them long enough to have to clip them at least twice. She did stop because she was so excited about the wedding and about getting all dolled up for it but then when she started kindergarten she started it up again. All I have to do is say "fingernails!!" to her and she'll stop (for the moment) but start up again. It's such a habit for her that she doesn't even realize she's doing it. One Halloween she was an M&M and the costume had those hard rubber hand things. She actually chewed a hole in the rubber! We've tried the bitter stuff you paint on the nails.... no help. Her pediatrician told me a long time ago that I should not allow her to paint her nails if she's biting them and then maybe that incentive would work. It did the first time..... now, she just doesn't care. She's such a tomboy that the nail polishing "treat" just isn't alluring enough for her. I used to bite my nails too when I was younger. You know what stopped me?? My mom finally allowed me to wear some minimal makeup, including some real light colored lipstick/lipgloss. I was so intent on that lipstick staying on that I stopped biting my nails. I knew if I put my fingers in my mouth, the lipstick would get rubbed off. Vain? Maybe! But it worked! If you do find a sure-cure, let me know! My daughter's habit is driving me nuts!! |
