Help, can a cocker spaniel b pee pad trained A good friend of mine lives in a area where there's a alot of large dogs that run around in packs. that hunt and hurt smaller than them dogs. and even animal control is abit useless there. they come out and capture and sometimes out right shoot the dogs. she wants a dog badly and loves the cocker spaniel. can a cocker spaniel be trained to use a pad? and can a dog that large be happy with short walks {run to the car and drive somewhere and walk them} living that way? I kinda of told her my thoughts are get a chihuahua or a yorkie. and when you leave the house with it put it in a carrier bag and do that. { just this Friday a lady's standard poodle was mauled pretty badly. and had to be put down.} my understanding these dogs belong to a proprety near by that breeds tons of large breed dogs, rotts, pitts, labs and just about anything esle they can. } and allow mix breedings and then to run the road. be gentle she's reading this board with me please. I don't see why not. Though you'd have to buy the larger pads, cuz they're bigger so is their pee:laugh: That situation sounds really scary, with all those big dogs running around loose, and that they're aggressive. I'd be scared to death, even if my dog was in a carrier, they'd still smell it and probably attack to get to it:( VERY bad! Animal control does NOTHING?!?! I'd call the cops then, every time I saw one of those dogs running loose. When they tell you to call AC, tell them that you tried that already and they did NOTHING. I know that our AC only works Mon-Fri, how useless is that:mad:? |
How horrible that all those dogs are allowed to run freely. It's sad for all the responsible owners out there who have to worry about their loving pets being hurt or killed. :( A cocker can be trained to use pee pads, if that's what she would like to do. It might not be as easy as with a toy breed, and might be a little more messy if it's a larger cocker. Mine is a smaller cocker (about 12 pounds) and she's almost 12 years old. She is trained to go potty outside, but at times if I'm going to be gone all day she will use the potty pad. As far as exercise goes, a cocker can get plenty of exercise with play in the house. Mine LOVES playing fetch in the house. Your friend could still give the dog additional outside exercise by taking it to a nearby park or somewhere where she doesn't have to worry about dog packs. My cocker doesn't spend much time outside, and she's lived a long, healthy life. I take her on walks around here and at the park, but she never spends time outside alone because we have coyotes and mountain lions around here. If your friend is set on a cocker, they are wonderful pets. If it will have to be potty pad trained, she might just look and see if she can find a smaller one, because some cockers get pretty big. Mine just happened to be the runt of the litter, but I have seen other little ones before. Good luck! :) |
any dog can be pee pad trained, some are just harder that others, but cockers are really smart and your friend shouldn't have any problems...:) |
my friend is looking at a fawn female cocker 3months old it's already to crate training and going outside. so would it confuse a pup to go straight to pad training after already going outside???? TyTy and Annie my friend. |
My cockers are pee pad trained and out side trained. I've had no problems with it. My female cocker was 6mos old and wasn't housetrained at all when I got her. She'd spent her entire life in a kennel. She is a great dog now and took to the pee pad training quickly. Good luck. Cockers are smart dogs so I'm sure everything will be fine.:) |

She's decided to wait til in a better place. today as she was going home from here, she almost got bit by a lab something from that place. so she's called the Animal control officer again and tomorrow she's calling the police and the local state rep about this. she's very shaken. she lives in a complex and while the tenents are allowed pets. they're not allowed large dogs over 15 pounds. Be careful my friend. TyTy |
