Question about vet's response
 

Hi,

I had a question for you ladies. I have a Shih-Tzu that will be 9 months old on Feb 5th. When she was 10 weeks old she woke up one morning whining. I went to pick her up & she went completely limp in my arms, after that she pooped on me, threw up , and then was fine. My vet said it was hypoglycemia. I can understand that episode because the day before she had her shots & hadn't eaten much. Last Thursday morning she woke up doing the same thing. I checked her gums, they were very pale and I gave her some syrup with a syringe the vet gave me for her if it happened again. She took the syrup well, threw up, and pooped. After that she was fine. I called the vet to tell him about her having another one of these attacks & to see if I should bring her in for bloodwork or something. He said I should just monitor her. I thought she would have outgrown this by now. It's very scary to me because I'm worried it's something else wrong. Do you think I should go see another vet that would do the bloodwork on her ? I'm really not happy with the "just monitor " her response! He's been my vet since I got my first dog when I was a teenager, but his lack of concern bothers me this time. She's been fine since this happened last week, but I'm just an overly worried mommy I guess.

if you have a feeling somethings wrong get it checked go with your instincts better safe than sorry

Yes, by all means go to a different Vet. There is something wrong. I don't know where some Vets. get their license, or even if they have one. Makes you wonder. She does need a blood work up and also ask for a bile acid test.

Your never going to rest till you have this checked, put your mind to rest & know your doing the right thing & have another vet check....better safe than sorry:)

If you don't feel comfortable with what your vet said then I would certainly get a second opinion.

Thanks for the replies. I have a feeling too that I need to get her checked out by another vet. It's the mommy instinct, like I have with my skinbabies. We just know better than these doctors do! I will call around tomorrow and make her an appointment. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

It sounds to me like she is having seizures. I don't think hypoglycemia cause them to lose control of their bowels.

If you really like your vet, maybe you can explain that you would like the bloodwork done as a precaution. My vet said the allergy testing was expensive and not real effective but I told him I wanted it it done anyway. Sometimes they are trying to save us money, I know my vet comments on how much I have to come in with Cali and Maya.

Oh Goodness! Different follow your "mommy instinct" and get her checked out! It may end up being nothing serious, but you will never know or have that peace of mind until you check it out! Good luck! Poor baby!
