Its a catch 22. In one breath your supporting puppy mills but in the next, they didnt ask to be apart of it. I bought my Baci from a pet store. "The Pet Company" Overpriced but i just couldnt leave him there. He was sick when i brought him home, although they guranteed a clean bill of health. Most of those places come with some kind of warentee as long as you get the dog checked out with 14 days of purchase. Baci had ringworm.. it was a **** to get rid of but I couldnt just give him back. They had to pay for all his vet bills. We had to contact the BBB on them to see the money. But as soon as we sent the paper in the check was in the mail. I wouldnt change it for the world.. he is my love. I say go for it.. ill rescue those two.. they look so scared and sad. :( |
I can easily understand about your situation. just looking at those photos is haunting :cry:....... They look soooo sad, & they probably have never known what it's like to be pampered. .........I wouldn't want to be in your shoes right now :( ..........I don't have any advise except, that if you do it keep them completely separate from your pets, or your home til you get a vet check, which I'm sure your already aware of :) ........My sister got a Chi. at Petland a few yrs. ago , against my advise,....... long story short........ he kept sleeping & was listless so she took him to the vet., he had parvo & died within weeks. No matter what you do, either decision is a tough choice, good luck:ghug: P.S. Stay out of those stores;) |
Both of them are so cute and I know how you feel...I have only been in two different petstores and Have never seen any dirty cages and the puppys did not look sad like that poor lab puppy. Im not going to say you should or shouldnt get them, But if you did please have them vet checked before bring them around your other pets. Me and my hubby use to do this too. But at the dog pound or pick up one thats been dumped. WE would bring it home and give it a home until we could rehome it. each time these dogs and cats tore at my heart. I try and think back to how many animals we have done this with and it had to be close to 60 plus. Many of them was covered in fleas, Ticks ear mites and lice.ear infections open cuts and sores mange,worms, ringworm, you name it. we treated and cared for them. and then hoped and prayed that we found them a loving home. But they was never kept around our own pets. If I was younger and in better health had more money id still be doing this.Just to see them so happy made us feel so good. |
that's why i don't go to pet stores or shelters or anything. i would own them all, it's too hard to leave them behind. :D just ask Abby (shelter rescue) |
Its a tough decision..could be a costly one too if the dogs are sickly and dangerous for your dogs at home. It is hard to see them and leave them behind...maybe they will get wonderful new homes..they are adorable and I cant see them getting put to sleep...unfortunately you cant save them all. Jen they're SO freakin cute! I love the lab especially. They both look awfully scared though. :( Poor little angels. I would never say to, but God only knows what they bought that lab down to, and that little Chi could be sick for all they know, and he'll probably never get the proper vet care with those sickos. I'd say get them Jen. Then report the pet store IMMEDIATLY! Good luck, and please let us know what happens! |
I haven't made a decision yet. Hubby and I are still thinking it over. I've rescued an older Poodle before (found it wandering the streets blind and all beat up) and I've rescued a lot of cats/kittens. The money isn't an issue for me ... the issue is giving my money to an awful pet store which in turn supports puppy mills. |

I'm going with a catch 22 as well. But I know how you feel and how HARD it is to leave them behind. I use to go in pet stores all the time and my daughter and I would play with the pups. I felt like by doing that I was giving them some 'time out of the cage' and some loving. I would leave in tears every time and cry the whole way home. I finally realized that I cannot do this to myself. I rarely go into the pet stores that have puppies and when I do, I won't take them out. :( Poor babies... :( |
I think that if you want to rescue an animal in need, who deserves a loving life, there are plenty in shelters needing our help...we don't HAVE to support puppy mills, and put money in the hands of unscrupulous breeders, and careless pet stores. Think about it...it PAYS for the pet stores to keep their animals in horrible conditions. They make MANY more sales, b/c of all the people who come in and feel sorry for the animals. Why be a part of supporting the cycle? You would do a lot more good by NOT buying an animal from them, and telling them exactly why, and telling them that you would tell everyone you know not to give them business as long as their animals were kept in such bad shape. But I understand why your heart went out to those sweeties. It's hard to remind ourselves that "saving" them only means putting MORE animals in that exact same position in the future. It would be doing more harm than good. |
have you tried to contact the SPCA or news and let them know the poor condition they are in? maybe they'l take them from them and close them down. and the adopt them out. |

Aspca I decided to call the ASPCA again because I just can't let this go. I just got off the phone w/ them and they are going to visit A World of Pets (again). Turns out they have a recent dispute still open which was filed by someone who said the dogs were in bad shape. They are going to inspect them again but she said there isn't much they can do for an eye infection (the Lab) other than give them a summons to have the animal taken to a vet for treatment. Then I mentioned how BOTH dogs were LIFELESS and extremely depressed. The woman said that most shelters dogs are like that and I said these are NOT shelter dogs. They are young puppies would SHOULD be bouncing off the walls and full of energy. They should not be listless and depressed. I told her I have 3 dogs and I can vouch for their energy and excitment -- it's UNUSUAL for a dog to act the way those 2 dogs acted. She said she understood what I was saying but there's only so much they can do. :( :( |
If the law won't do anything, call a local television station that runs local stories. We have one here that if a person is getting "pushed around" by a business or something just because they can, the news station will do a story and air it and that usually helps the matter. If nothing else would come, they might air the story and start making it a public obstacle about all the problems with the pet stores that aren't responsible, that would give the people in the area who don't spend all day researching animals and stores and don't really know what goes on behind the scenes, a look at it and cause them some bad business. Kind of airing their dirty laundry. Get the local news involved. |
This where a letter writing & phone calling campaign comes in. Start writing local congress and legislature. Write the governor etc. Start a petion on line at :http://www.thepetitionsite.com/?ltl=1169657588 It is free and you can get a lot of signatures. There are several states and counties that are cracking down on puppymills and petstores lately. This is where I would start...see if you can get local animal agencies to help you... :( :( :( Looking at those dogs breaks my heart. They both look terribly unhealthy and scared to death. If you do decide to buy them, I sure wouldn't pay full price. Tell the pet store owner that those pups are sick and need care, and make them go down on the price. |
I got Chewy at a pet shop... He is the light of all our lives around here... He is healthy. I would say buy the pups if you are willing to chance then being sick... if they were drugged you don't know if they will wind up ok. If you do buy them I would bring them stright to a vet to be checked out... and keep them away from other pets until you know they are not sick. If you don't adopt them... Just pray they get new homes quick so they will be happy with a family soon. I know it's heart breaking and I saved my baby, but I would not risk bringing a sick pup around him. He trusts be to keep him safe... Good luck! |
If you can afford to get them, do so. Then take them to the vet & if they have to pay for any vet bills, make sure they pay through the nose & get the puppies well and in new homes. If your dad would take the lab, he wouldn't have to be around yours and I'm sure you wouldn't have any trouble getting someone to take that darling little chi. The tiny ones are usually easier to find a home for than the big dogs. Good luck to you & them. God bless you & you need to give your husband a great big hug for being so kind.:) |
