Horror at the Dentist office! SInce my kids were born I have really neglected my teeth. So I went to the dentist and got a treatment plan and went in for my first treatment date last Thursday for a buildup for a crown and impressions for the next appt to actually put on the crown. The build up went fine, numbed me up did the work, and then the dental hygienist came in to the the impression for the fitting of the actual crown to order to place next visit. SHe squirted the impression agent into the form and placed it in my mouth, this stuff sets up pretty quick, Im laying down almost standing on my head, you know how they really put you back in the dentist chair. Well why she is holding the impression form in my mouth, I guess a piece of this stuff falls in my throat. ( Im still pretty numb and am not aware.) SHe starts to say something "WHoops there is a piece of........" Next thing I know something is down in my throat. SOMETHING BIG!! Im trying to sit up but she is holding this form in my mouth and Im tipped backwards. At first I start pointing at the form, and reaching for it, but she still is pressing it into the top of my mouth. I finally, which could have been a matter of just a few seconds but felt like forever, I put my feet down, grab her wrist, and struggle to sit up and get this damn thing out of my mouth. WOULD YOU BELEIVE SHe is still trying to hold this thing in my mouth!! THis is pretty graphic but as I sit up , I start vomitting clear fluid and then I cant get my air , I cant make one sound, YES she is still trying to hold this *** in my mouth finally I get enough strength and leverage to actually use both hands to pull her hand out of mouth. Im trying to cough, swallow anything to get this thing out and then what felt like a golf ball painfully went down my throat. I think then she finally realizes I might have a little problem and starts givng me water. I have tears streaming down my face, and gag up more clear fluid. She asks "are you alright" I still cant talk. Im starting to get my composure after about 3 glasses of water, and she is over there looking at the form she took, and saying "I was trying to tell you you had something in your throat, I think this form got to set up long enough for the impression" Im over there sitting with mascara streaming down my face, and the left side of my throat feeling like a swallowed glass and she is worried about an impression! I say "Oh my God, what was that, I couldnt get my breath" SHe tells me it was a piece of impression, never apolizes. At that point Im glad to be able to breath but shook up. The dentist comes in and looks at the impression and me, and asked the assistant what happened she says "I got gagged", and hes right out the door, their busy, and hes off to the next patient. I think Im in shock, Im wiping the mascara and tears off my face. I think Im mumbling "oh my god". I dont even remember. But I know I can breath again!! I get finished up, go to the bathroom and clean up. I go to the front desk. As Im ready to go, the hygienist walks by and says "Thanks" I say Oh yes thanks for the snack. The girls at the front say what? I tell them that I just about got choked to death in the dental chair and leave. WHen I get home I tell my husband and realize how upset I am because I start sobbing. He tells me to call and tell the dentist exactly what happened, but I dont end up calling. I decide to forget about it. Well that was last thursday, for two days I had a sore throat after the appointment, then it felt better but then it started when I eat I felt like something is lodged deep in my esophagus with each swallow, Now today Im aware of it all the time, not just with eating. My mom starting flipping out. What is wrong with you get to the doctor, it might be that stuff caught and causing damage. WHy didnt you call that damn dentist. SO I am going to get an xray Tomorrow. DO you think its possible this stuff is caught in my digestive tract? Is this one of the craziest things you have ever heard of!!? When I think about it, and now that I am starting to have a problem thinking it is related, I guess it was a very serious situation I wanted to sweep under the rug. I know the dentist does not know what completely happened. |

Oh my! What an awful experience!!! |
I know isnt that nuts!!! Talking about it, it seems like IM talking about someone else and not me! But thats how it happened. I may have to get dentures now:eek: , I dont know if Ill be able to go back to any dentist, I wont be going back there. |
wow Been there, done that...it is awful...last time the impression would not come off my teeth...I thought every tooth in my mouth would come out with the impression...give me a root canal any day..never felt a bit of discomfort, but taking impressions and some xrays make me barf!!! |
DO you all think its possible this piece is stuck? |
I think it's more likely you have trauma where it was stuck. The tissue might be inflamed and feel like something stuck there. I don't know for sure though, so best to TELL that dentist and get the x-ray! |
I still would call the dentist today and tell him exactly what happened and that in the future you want him to do the impressions or at least remain in the room. Hopefully it is your esophagus swelling a little and nothing stuck in there. Good luck!! |
hopefully it isnt stuck, when is your xray? please keep us posted..and by the way..if you didnt already, I would call and tell the dentist exactly what happened that day. |
Well I hope it isnt stuck! Its weird cause it happened 5 days ago. It is getting worse. It is starting with being aware of swallowing like a lump was there. RIght under my breasts at the end of the ribcage. NOw I feel something there all the time without swallowing. Hope its nothing. |
I don't know if it's possible it is stuck or not, but it's good to find out what is causing the problem. I feel so sorry for you. She was negligent in allowing that to go down your throat in the first place! |
Oh that is awful I have had some bad dentist exeriences too but not that bad. Your lucky you didnt choke |
Definatly call that dentist, and tell him exactly what happend, and how!! It's your mouth, and you have rights! There's no way i would leave it! |
I'd call and tell him what happened too - good grief - you could have choked to death ! That's horrible and you'll probably never be able to go again without being scared silly now. |
You definitely need to tell him. He can never fix a problem that he doesn't know exists. Get the xray, just to make sure. |
Oh you poor thing! I would atleast call them and tell them how you feel. I'm so sorry you had to go thru that! Now you are going to have major fear of the dentist. What ever it is I hope you start to feel better. Let us know! |
Wow! Get on the phone w/ that dentist and have him pay for xrays or something to make sure you are okay! That is nuts! I probably would have knocked that lady off me! ((hee, hee)) I hope you get better soon! Definitely call and have it checked out!!!! |
that doesn't make sense why would a assistant just let you lay almost upside down choking? was she so stupid she couldn't tell? mine ask me all the time if i'm ok and if i were gagging and trying to cough or choke something up then they would defiNATELY notice! the impression can be redone i know exactly what your talking about but the only way a piece could have come off is if it was bitten off or they put to much on it and it maybe dripped off? either way why in the world would someone hold a person down who is choking? she had to know something was happening i mean how can you work right in people's faces all day and not know when somethings not right? i would not go back there as the impression will surely be incorrect and a crown will not fit if it wasn't completely set or a piece came off. i would go in or at the very least call and let this "dentist" know what happened!! what if this happens again to someone who can't get up? like a child or elderly person they may actually choke to death!! go elsewhere but let the place know..that assistant should look for a new carear path! |
WOW! You must have been petrified!...........You must have been so frightened knowing something was clearly wrong w/ your ability to breath & no-one was wanting to pay attention  . ..... Sometimes as women I think we don't want to make a fuss or cause a scene even when our own safety is a jeopardy.............. I think doctors are so afraid of lawsuits that they don't want to acknowledge when something happens & they hope you just go away. I glad to hear your alright( sort of) it could have been a lot worse... .hopefully it's just some irritation.. don't ever feel foolish to look after your own well-being.....after all if you don't who will :) |
OH MY I would definately cal the dentist and explain. I had major work done with impressions and by the tgird trip LOUDLY announced the one assistant was NOT allowed to work on me. Sh would pinch my gums til they bled with instruments, gag me with impressions and one THREW an impression across the room when it came out wrong. By the way.. I smack her on the third thing. The dentists asked what happed at the impression smack thing and she screamed I was impossible to work with because i was a baby. The dentist then did it himself with ZERO trouble or discomfort for me!!! You REALLY need to speak up to let a dentist know he has a BAD assistant |

Call Him And Do It Now, And Write Up A Formal Complaint, Or At Least A Staement Of What Happened. They Are Getting Paid So Much Money For This And They Need To Do Their Job, That Is Unaccpetable That They Could Almost Let You Die There By Chocking To Death. And Isnt That Impression Stuff The Stuff They Use To Mold Out Tooth Or Teeth, I Mean Doesnt That Stuff Harden? Its Like Clay I Belive. I Would Call Soon. |
I hope everything is okay :( almost the same thing happened to me when I went to get my form for braces..the stupid lady put the stuff in my mouth and she pushed it too far and it was stuck in my throat and i couldn't even breathe cause i was choking on it and the stupid lady just kept it in my mouth shes like oh yeah that happens sometimes:confused: GIVE ME A BREAK needless to say I never went back to her. |
I know it sounds ridiculous, but she seriously acted like she didnt have a clue how serious the choking was. I really dont know how she couldnt have known. SHe saw the stuff go down my throat. I know the dentist made a comment to her while working on me, he said now stay with me now stay with me....I think he was referring to suctioning to her. As jp4m2 said I think I just didnt want to make a big scene, to tell the truth it was shocking and as silly as it sounds I was embarassed too. WHen it was all over, I wanted to forget it. I probably would still forget it but Im having problems now. Not sure if something is stuck at my stomach entrance or what but its starting to feel like it. Im supposed to go to the doctor not tommorrow but the next day. I might need to go tomorrow though. Its really bad when I sit down, like heartburn, but a poking jabbing sensation too. Doesnt really hurt but is uncomfortable. Its scarey because the stuff does harden very quickly and what I swallowed definitely had a sharp edge because it scraped my throat and I had a sore throat from it on the left side for a couple days. You know shouldnt they have suction on when they do anything like that, when there is a chance something can go into a persons throat? SHe didnt use it at all. Should I wait until I get my xrays done to call or before I get them? Im not sure if the xrays will have any evidence of anything since it might just be trauma. Gess 2007 is starting with a big bang for me:D |
I think you should call them now, you wouldn't even be going to get any x-ray if not for this incident. How scary for you and it is still scary, not knowing if you have something stuck in you!! Also, like another poster said, what if you hadn't been able to get her off of you, like if you had been a child or an elderly person, when would she have noticed there was a problem...when you quit breathing? She had to have noticed you struggling and to just hold you down...that is ridiculous...you should call now. I hope everything comes out all right!! |
I would definitely have a chat with the dentist in private. My concern is how he blew you off so quick when he asked what happened. He did not seem overly concerned, and his tech did not seem overly bright. If it were me, I would find a new dentist. |

I would call and tell them what happened and tell them you anr going to have it checked out. and Id ask them to pay for the dr visit and xrays.........I hope all is fine. |
 OMG! I hope that you're okay! I'm not a sue-happy person, but I think I'd be calling a lawyer if this was me. That's just plain negilgence and you could have DIED:( Hugs:love: |
what happened with this? Is everything ok? |
I thought about this thread also yesterday when my daughter got her braces off. I was thinking that they probably did an impression to make her retainer and that got me thinking about this horrible experience. I'd like to know too whatever came of your problem! |
