Eliminating bad habits (smoking) In preparation for beginning the Master Cleanse, I am trying to eliminate a few of my bad habits so they wont be an issue for me while while I'm de-toxing on the cleanse. The biggies for me are caffeine and cigarettes. I live off of Diet Coke so that was the first thing to go. I am still drinking coffee in the morning but after that, no caffeine for the rest of the day. I am going to gradually decrease my coffee until I am off of it to hopefully avoid the headaches of caffeine withdrawal. Okay, now for the really hard part. Stop smoking. I was on the master cleanse board and someone recommended a book- The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. I started it today and it is an amazing book. It really makes you think about quitting in a whole new way. You are not supposed to quit while reading it but by the end you are supposed to just want to. I'm only on pg. 75 and already I'm excited about quitting, not dreading it. I really feel good about it. If you are a smoker, look it up on Amazon and read the reviews. They are what made me buy the book and so far I am in agreement with them I'll let y'all know when I finish it and if I really do quit (of course I will! ;) ) |
good luck to you, but i need drugs for this one |
Good Luck Sweetie, I quit smoking two years ago and caffeine about a year ago. Now if I could just stop eating! lol! If you are truly ready to quit you will have a much easier time and that book sounds like what you need to get ready! . If you need support just shoot me a pm. I care. |

Hi Nikki! I posted this book on WT about a month (or so ) ago...My daughter read this book and hasn't picked up a cigarette in over 7 weeks! She doesn't have any cravings, withdrawls and hasn't gained any weight! I am now reading it....Good Luck to you! |
I have spent the whole day reading this book and I just finished and tossed all of my cigarettes and ash trays in the garbage. I have quit several times in the past but this is the first time I feel excited and happy to be doing it. I know I'll have withdrawal since I am obviously addicted to nicotine but I know every time I feel an urge for a cigarette and don't have one I have just one a battle against the addiction. I really recommend this book. |
Sounds like a great book. Maybe I should get it for my DH. I quit 6 years ago. Some things that helped me: Cut drinking straws to cig length and use them to suck on or just to put in your mouth -- sure it sounds silly but this one thing really helped me, epsecially when I was driving. Whenever I would get the urge to smoke real bad, I would go brush my teeth. No one likes to spoil minty fresh breath with a smoke. :) I wrapped an emergency cigarette up in about 10 pieces of paper, each one taped like crazy, put that in a box and taped it up too. That way, I always knew there was one there and was not tempted to go buy any and it was just too much trouble to try and unwrap all that paper and tape. I finally threw it away after a few months. I quit but did gain a bunch of weight. So, it is probably important to substitute really good foods for the smoking urge. I must have grabbed too many goodies along the way to soothe the withdrawal. That's the big pitfall to avoid. I used the patch to help for the first few weeks. Good luck to you!! |
Good luck!! |
Congrats on your decision to quit smoking. I did that first, before I quit caffeine (a year later). Quitting too many things all at once may set you up for failure, so one thing at a time please! Many people in my support group recommended Carr's book. I wish you the best. I can tell you from experience that the first three weeks are HE--, the first 6 months are some better. It gets better with time. It takes about a year to start feeling like a non-smoker. I strongly suggest you join an online support group. It will really help you get through those moments when you want nothing more than to be a slave to Nic (Nicodemon). I am a member of http://www.stopsmokingcenter.net I have been quit for 1 Year, 4 Months, 1 Day, 17 hours, 52 minutes and 31 seconds (488 days). I have saved $1,744.81 by not smoking 5,864 cigarettes. I have saved 2 Weeks, 6 Days, 8 hours and 40 minutes of my life. I could never have achieved these stats without the help of my support group. I hope to see you post similar stats here in a year or so! PM me if I can be of any help to you. |
Gosh Nikki, you sound just like me. Diet Coke and Cigarettes are my weakness. I wish I could drop them both and never pick them up again - but it is SO HARD!! Good for you for really wanting this - and for trying so hard. I know you can do it girl! By the way - I will be going to Amazon to check out that book - it sounds wonderful! :) |
Day two and I feel great. One thing the book emphasized is this is a positive thing so don't mope around about it and think, I want a cigarette. Once you have decided to be a nonsmoker, you do not want one, your body is just craving nicotine. SO every time I feel that urge I just picture a little monster inside me who is demanding his dose of nicotine and I just tell him, screw you! You're not getting it. Then I feel like I'm one step closer to killing the damn thing off. It probably sounds silly without reading the book. After reading it I don't feel like I am quitting, I feel like have quit- does that make sense? |
Good luck!!!!! Hey, if I can do it, YOU can too:D I smoked for over 25 years, on and off, mostly on:o I quit 2 months ago, in Starr's honor, and I plan to never start again! You can do it!!!!!!!!!!:girl_hug: |
