Where do you get your fabric?

Our local Wal-Mart has already depleted their material selection - you know, all Wal-Marts are closing this dept in all of their stores!!!! :eek:

And, our Hobby Lobbies do not have that great of selections - we do have a Hancocks, but I have never really found anything that we just "had to have" there.

Is there any stores that might have websites or any websites on materials to buy? --even thought I HATE buying fabric without looking at it first - in person.

What stores do you buy your fabric from?

I get mine from Hancock Fabric. Or Joanns fabric.

I don't have a Jo-Anns here? Is it a store or are they online?

I'm not looking for anything specific - just trying to find some new, better places to get some material - plus, I take my grandmother on her weekly errands and she quilts.

I heard that about Walmart but per the sales person at our Walmart, she does not think it is going anytime soon :) I sometimes get fabrics there. Mostly it is Joann's and Hancock's.

Joann has an online store but the selection is limited I think. I will send you the link when I get an e-mail from them next.

That is what we thought too. I take my grandmother on her weekly errands and, of course, Wal-Mart is ALWAYS one of our stops. She has been getting some cute bird material there. Anyway, it was before Christmas and we got some stuff and asked the salesperson about all Wal-Mart stores doing away w/ their craft dept. She told us it was mainly on the fabrics, but the crafts would be thinned down too.

Then, not long after Christmas we went and the fabrics were marked down, but there was no more bird fabric. My grandmother went this past Monday w/ my aunt and she said that they had already gotten rid of all of their fabric - so it didn't take them long at all.

Crazy! Thanks for the information - I will look for that site tonight!

Jo-Anne's is a huge store in CA that sells a good selection of fabric (especially the Joanne superstores)and tons of cool crafts supplies like a MIchael's. I'm not sure if they have it outside of CA. They sell online too but I can't imagine buying fabric online seeing that I have to touch and feel to see if the quality is good and what the washing instructions are. But if you don't mind, I've seen good old ebay carry fabric as well. Not sure where you reside, but here's their link, you can do a store search http://www.joann.com/

Don't know if you have a Ben Franklin anywhere near you, but they have an awesome selection of fabrics (or at least mine does). I love Ben Franklin!

JoAnns and Hancocks are the only two major retailers that I am aware of. Lots of small mom and pop shops -- those places are where you find the really neat unique stuff. You can also google for fabric outlet stores -- maybe you'll luck up :)

I do not think I have one around here, but I will do an online search and see. I don't mind driving to some nearby bigger cities.

There are a few smaller "mom and pop" stores (and probably more if I knew where to look). I have found some great materials there, sometimes they have alot higher prices and sometimes, it is cheaper.

OH no . . .I hope not. I was just there last Friday and they still have TONS of fabrics . . . I better stock up on materials that I always get from there :p
We don't have a Joann's superstore but I know Seattle does . . I went there once and it was HUGE.

Check if you have a quilt store. I know we do but they never go on SALE :eek: and their fabrics are outrageously pricey but gosh the selection si pretty awesome :)

I heard it was only a few hundred walmart stores nationwide that are discontinuing thier fabric departments. Thats what my local wallmarts said.

What are you looking for in bird fabric, can you describe it? I saw the little bird house fabric here while back at wal mart.Our hancocks has lots of neat fabrics in prints and Jo Ann's doesn't seem to have as much a selection in them in the local store here. I always get the better sale fabrics opposed to the ones on sale of less quality and find in the long run it is better investment. Patti

Not really familiar with Arkansas, but there are 3 Ben Franklins there, 2 in Hot Springs and 1 in Shannon Hills.

I am in NWA - Hot Springs is about 2 - 2 1/2 hours away...never heard of Shannon Hills though?! Thanks for looking that up for me. ((I just got back online from dinner)).

Well, we aren't really looking for anything special, but we always pick up some sort of fabric and save back - hey, you just never know when you might need some! HA! Anyway, the bird fabric, my grandmother was using for cards - she would cut out the birds and use "underwonder" and maybe fabric glue - they made really cute handmade cards.

Hancocks does have a big selection - I just wasn't impressed with our store the last, oh, four or five times I have been there. - in fact, the last two times I was in there, they were pretty poor experiences, so I just haven't really cared to go back.

That may be, I don't know. It was in our local paper about the Wal-Mart company closing out several depts.
*The tire and lube area

We asked at one of our local Wal-Mart stores and the lady said that the layaway would be for online merchandise or something like that - I also heard it would be for furniture and appliances. I never heard what the tire and lube area would be.

She said that all new Wal-Mart stores that are being built, are being built w/o the fabric section. And all stores that have it now, it is gradually getting phased out....she said that in that store, toys would take over where the crafts/fabric were and the what crafts they would keep, would go on the few aisles that had toys. She said most Wal-Marts stores will be seeing a new layout.

So, I really do not know....I wonder if they have anything about it on their website? Probably not, huh? We go out of town just about every weekend, and we are always stopping at a Wal-Mart some where, so I think I might start asking just to see.........would that be weird??!!:cool:

The Walmart near us got so many complaints about getting rid of the fabric department that they decided to keep it. The prices are so cheap there. I also go to Yardage Town which is more expensive but has a bigger selection.

I had no idea that Walmart was phasing out it's fabric section:eek: They are opening a new Super Walmart in our town and I thought they were just claering it out to avoid moving it to the new store. Darn! That was the ONLY store in our little town that carried fabric!!! I don't know what I will do now. The next closest is 45 miles away and is only a Hobby Lobby!

I get mine at Wal-Mart in Lompoc, but I get the more designer fabrics and ultra suede at Bettys in Santa Maria.
I did find some sites on line that had great material, and some even have the breed specific ones.

Darn...the other night when I was at walmart I was in the craft area and one customer said she heard they are getting rid of their fabric. She then pointed to empty areas! I told her I hope it just meant a truck hadn't come in! I don't buy a lot of fabric there, but when I see some I like, I buy it. It is also so handy if I need something at night when everything else is closed. Darn...why are they doing that? I will be asking next time I am there!

My grandmother asked at one of our local Wal-Marts and the person said that it was because that area didn't bring in much money and they were having to pay 2 or so people to stay in that dept. I don't know though. It is crazy....I think of Wal-Mart as pretty much a "one stop" store - which is what they had wanted when they started building them - now, they are changing so much, who knows what they will be like.

I hope atleast one of ours will keep their fabrics, but I don't know. The person my grandmother spoke too said that no Wal-Mart will have them pretty soon (course, I am sure that depends). I would be curious to see.
