I need some advice for Additional Surgery on my Thyroid Hi There! Has anyone else had problems with their Thyroid post surgery? I had my Thyroid out on 9/22/06 due to precancerous nodules on my Thyroid. I have lost my voice! I sound like I have a continuous case of laryngitis. I went to the Dr's today and she told me my left vocal cords are paralyzed...well that explains my voice loss (which my 2 teenagers don't mind :D ) She says I have 3 choices: 1) Surgery to put a plastic chip in my vocal cords...SAID NO! Will not do that! 2) Injection of Radiesse in my vocal cords...outpatient surgery..not sure.. 3) Acupuncture and /or speech therapy in all 3 choices Anybody else have any experience with this? I am a bit discouraged at this point. Thank you. |
My mom has "Hashimoto's Disease" and had to have half of her thyroid removed. She doesn't have any issues w/ it now or further symptoms, thanks to the Synthroid that she's on. However, w/ her vocal cords, she was having issues because of Acid Reflux...that's being controlled by medication too. I wish you the best and I'd look more into option two and see if that holds a high success? |

Can't offer any experience on the 3 choices you listed but I can refer you to a pretty good support site for thyroid and maybe someone there has had to go through that: http://thyroid.about.com Once there, scroll down on the list to left of page and click on FORUMS. Good luck! BTW -- how are you doing with the thyroid meds? Took me quite a while and a few changes to find the right med and the right dose. |

No, I won't get my voice back unless I have some sort of procedure done to correct the paralyzed vocal cords. The Dr put a scope down my throat today and took some pictures as I was trying not to gag... but my left vocal cords do not move at all. I am doing fine with synthroid, I have been on that for 6 years. I am now on 100 mcg. I have to have blood work done again soon, they had to remove one of my parathyroid glands at the same time. So my calcium levels have to be monitered closely for a while. Thanks for the info, I'll check out the website. |
My mom has a paralyzed vocal cord and they wanted to do surgery but she is in her late 80's and the surgery sounded too risky for her. She sounds hoarse all the time and is on thyroid medicine. She tried the speech therapy but decided it wasn't helping much. Maybe a second opinion would help you decide. |
Well, this is my 4th opinion....I just want to talk to somebody who has had the injection of Radiesse in their vocal cords. Radiesse is primarily used for plastic surgery patients to fill in deep lines and plump their lips:) ... This is affecting my job, because I have to talk to clients on the phone and they cannot understand me if they are hard of hearing.:( I found this link, it was on health watch in Austin, Tx a few weeks ago: http://www.news8austin.com/content/l...t/?ArID=175278 |
OMG i went through this in early 2005. it was terrible. I thought i had one lump then they removed all of my right and 3/4 of my left thyroid. my voice sounded funny for months and hurt to talk . |

Synthroid Quote:
what do the calcium levels have to do with it? I am also taking Forteo shotz b/c i had osteopenia ... No surgery in the conversation yet ... I surely hope not judging from what you all have to say about it .... I have no experience with the surgery but I sure hope you can get help with your voice ... did they warn you that there might be such a side effect? |
BTW, I was diagnosed with HYPOthyroidism ... does that make a difference from you guys??? |

I got it done in salt lake actually. and it freakin hurt for a long time. |
[QUOTE=Monday]I have been on synthroid for 6 months (0.025 mg ... kinda coral color round tablet).. I go back in January and he will do blood work. I only see him in July and January so far! what do the calcium levels have to do with it? Yes, my doctor who did the surgery said it could happen but it was a very small risk. He said that it doesn't happen very often at all:confused: I also have hypothyroidism, it makes ME very intolerant to cold. Parathyroid glands regulate the calcium level in our bodies so that the nervous and muscular systems can function properly. They are located behind the thyroid. You have four, I only have 3 now because one was embedded in my very large thyroid gland. |
I had at least one of my parathyroids removed too and had a calcium imbalance after my total thyroidectomy. My lips and around my mouth starting tingling and going numb. It was no problem, I just took 10 times the normal calcium dose for about 2 months. My remaining parathyroids finally came awake and took over. Sorry you had such a bad time -- it was the easiest surgery I ever had. My thyroid was so enlarged that I actually felt a lot better right after surgery. It was such a relief to be able to swallow normally again. I think I was also greatly relieved as there was no invasive cancer. I had the FNA biopsy before the surgery and it was inconclusive due to abnormal cells. My scar is not bad at all either -- barely noticeable. I had a great surgeon -- a real joker. When I met him, I asked how much experience he had with thyroidectomies and he said they called him Mr. T because he took out so many thyroids. I figured a sene of humor on a surgeon was rare enough I would stick with him! |

I have been taking extra calcium, I need to have another blood panel done. My scar is looking very good, way better then I imagined. I'll try and post a picture of me a week after surgery...pretty bad...people would actually ask if I was knifed:eek: My family was very over protective and would block the stares of the overly curious. I am going to try acupuncture first because it is the least invasive of all procedures and least expensive, the medical bills from this are killing me:( |
1 Attachment(s) This is a terrible picture of me, but was taken one week after my surgery. This was the first day I got dressed to go out other then my pj's (to the Dr's to have bandages removed) Since I was not allowed to drive my son had to drive me. The bruising actually got a bit darker, I was asked several times if I had been attacked:confused: Attachment 86234 |
oh wow...sorry to hear you're having such a hard time - that sounds painful and LOOKS even more painful...I have no idea what I'm saying here but I read your options and #2 sounded good - do you think the acupuncture will be worth it ??? |
Well, it is the least expensive and the least invasive. Hubby and I were talking about it last night and he thinks I should give it a try. I am going to have to do something, I spend alot more time on here:) because it is too hard to talk to my girlfriends on the phone...:( and I am a chatty person. My husband used to joke he paid extra but now he is feeling bad. I just told myself things happen for a reason and maybe I was just supposed to use this time to listen more?;) |
O Michelle...I am so sorry to hear you had to go through this! I would probably choose the acupuncture first also..I wish you didn't have to go through any of this but, I have heard good things about acupuncture... And by the way (off the subject!) It was nice to see a picture of you! Now I can put a face to Bailey's Mom! You are very pretty...even with your surgery! When do you get Angel? Michelle...I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. :ghug: Brenda |
Thanks, Brenda!:) My girlfriend (who is also a fantastic medium:p ) told me to go ahead with the acupuncture and gave me a couple recommendations, so I'll call next week. I am planning on picking Angel up next month. I am waiting until Olivia and I get back from our mother/daughter trip to see what the weather is doing. My step mom is not doing very well lately (she really misses my dad) so I am going to plan to stop through Oklahoma also on the puppy trip. Happy New Year! Thanks for everything!:) |

My Dad has had acupuncture for spinal stynosis (SP?) I do hear good things about it and pray it works for you...I am sorry to hear your step-mom isn't doing well...Holidays can be very difficult for people when they have lost a loved one...I know this all too well... I hope you and your daughter have a great, safe trip! and can't wait to see pics of that new little girl!! I am so excited for you... Let me know how big she is when you get her....I had made a dress for Sadie and it is wayyy to small...By the time I dug it out of the drawer and tried it on Lillie it was a little too tight for her.....soooo if Little Angel is around 2 to 3 lbs this dress will fit her...all I would need from you is her chest measurements so I could adjust the velcro for her...and it's going to be FREE!! I'd just need your address again! let me know if your interested in it! Good Luck Michele! |
You are too sweet! I'll let you know how big she is when I finally get her. Right now she is 2.5lbs, full grown she'll probley only be 3.5 to 4lbs. I'm hoping more towards the 4lb.:aimeeyork I have also heard a lot of positive things about acupuncture, I have been a bit leary because of all those needles  but after what I went through that will be a piece of cake!:D |
My husband has a paralyzed vocal cord - from a surgical procedure which used a very large breathing tube (so it wasn't thyroid surgery). At first the cord was paralyzed in the open position, so he was hoarse and he choked when he tried to eat solid food (since the cord was in the open position, then the trachea (tube to his lungs) was not sealed off when he swallowed) - it was so terrible, he lost 40 pounds and he wasn't overweight to begin with! Finally, the paralyzed cord moved to the center position so that when the other one closed (during swallowing) then he didn't choke. Also, his hoarsness improved and he only is hoarse from time to time. They said that he didn't need a surgical procedure - so I'm not sure how his paralysis is different. I hope things go well for you. It is scarey to have a paralyzed cord! |
My goodness -- I had no bruising. I also had steri-strips covering my incision. Had to leave them in place til they fell off. I had a previous surgery scar and the doc used the same one, so mine was just a little higher than a normal thyroidectomy cut. |

Send me her chest measurment when you get her...(your address too!) Lillie is 4 lbs and it's just about a half inch to small (around her chest) so it should fit you new furbaby perfectly!! I really like the way the dress came out too! It's hard to judge sometimes on the sizes...Oh well...little Angel will LOOK like an angel in this dress!! I am going to TRY to attach it...hope you like it and if you DON'T want it I won't be upset...Just thought you might want it. On the acupuncture....my Dad said you don't even feel the needles....I think because they are so thin.......just take a deep breath and pray! |

They also lost me in the hospital for several hours...I had surgery at 10 am, I didn't get back into my room until 6:30pm. They actually came into my room at one point to take my husband to have surgery, they didn't know where I was. My husband starting throwing a fit! Not a great experience! |

Brenda, I love the dress, it is adorable! If it fits her of course I want it. You need to let me pay you for it! I hope I can't feel the needles....I let you know!:p Take care, I need to clean my kitchen now, My son and his friends are eating me out of house and home!!They need to go back to college soon:p |

Yes, it is a bit scary but more irritating at this point! My vocal cords are in a V so I have a bit of choking on certain liquids, food is ok. The Dr said since only one side is working it is over compensating for the left side, & over time I could strain the right side and not have a voice. I just really don't want any more surgery and was hoping someone had the Radiesse procedure to let me know how it went. I am glad to hear your husband is doing better, you never know what will happen during surgery. |
