Cover up Gray Hair with out using Dyes? Help! Ok, so I'm one of them women who hates to spend money & time in a salon so I cut my own hair and have avoided dying it because it takes wayyyyy too long! All that mixing and spreading and waiting and washing - sigh.... I think I hate the time more than the money - Yikes! So my question, I have very long dark brown hair and getting more and more gray, actually it's WHITE.! I don't want to dye it cuz with dark hair, I'd have to touch it up every few weeks and that takes too much time... Dang! I wish I was blonde!!! Is there like something I can add to my shampoo or conditioner that will help to comouflauge the gray? If you know of a secret please share! "I wanna wash that gray right out of my hair" Literally!:D |
You cut your own hair?!?! Wow, I wanna see pics. Are you on a thread somewhere here? I have brown hair also, and I'm getting gray in the front. There's a handful, not too noticeable unless you get right up on it. My kids like to tease me until I remind them it's stress from them. :p I also have a lock of it in the back of my head that I've had for years. Nothing I use color wise works. Whether it's something we do at home or a salon. :( I usually try and highlight blonde tones which blends in with it and it's not so noticeable. I need a hairdo too. Anyone? Come on? Who wants to come visit Corinne and I and hook us up? |
I LOVE gray hair, so I can't help you, other than to say "just let it go". I started getting gray hair when I was 18. By the time I was 30, I had lots of gray and was putting a temporary color in every month (this was 20+ years ago). I went to the hair dresser to get it done, but it was called a "comb through color" it only took her a couple of minutes to put it on and then it had to set for about 5 minutes. I have no idea if they have anything like that now, but you could certainly do that yourself, if they do. Anyway, when I met my future husband :D he said "why are you putting that stuff in your hair", so........ I haven't since! Now that I am 55, my hair is almost completely gray and I get compliments on it all the time. People stop me on the street and ask me how I get my hair this color. My hairdresser laughs because she says you cannot make your hair gray - only blond. Anyway, my point is that you might want to consider letting it go! :p |
I don't think there's any products out there that will actually cover the grey, but you can get highlighting shampoo that will eliminate any brassy tones you may have on the grey and make it a more beautiful silver color. These shampoos are typically blue or purple in the bottle. |
HAHAh... Been cutting my own hair since I was a teen. If anybody else does it they always mess it up:p NO.. there is NOTHING that cures or covers gray hair except dyes, or a HAT ! |

Have you tried a temporary rinse? They last about 28 shampoos and gradually lighten up so the gray gets lighter but no roots. Actually, the gray hair takes color and looks like highlights. I've been using one for several months now, they only have to stay on your hair for 10 minutes, there's no bad smell, no staining on your skin and they leave your hair soft and shiny. My hairdresser actually asked me what I was using and said she likes what it does for my hair. Remember, as you age you should gradually lighten your hair so the gray doesn't stand out so much. I don't mean go from black to blonde overnight but going from a medium brown to a sandy blonde or golden blonde isn't that drastic of a change and it takes a few years off your age too! |
i found the best product in the whole wide world, you girls are gonna love me for this.... but first i must say ive been going gray since my 20 s and every two weeks i have to dye it, what a pain in the butt... and your right,it takes for ever and its just a nuisance.. anyway i found this product, its a spray in hair color and works perfectly for those days you just dont feel like coloring it... you know you want to wait a week or two.... it comes in black, lightbrown, medium brown , dark brown and maybe some other colors, dont know, wasnt looking for that... all you do is spray this can 6 inhes away from your greys and waaaaa laaaa, no greys to be seen ... it washing out when you wash your hair..im telling you its the best thing i ever got... i found it on amerimark.com spray in hair color...and its so cheap tooo.. try it.. tell me what you think... |
It seems a lot of celebrities will go from brown to blonde when the grays get too much. You do not have to color as much since the gray and blonde can hide better. Start with highlights and go from there... Good Luck! |

And, as far as going blonde - some of us just don't have the skin tones for blonde. LOL.....I canNOT imagine me a blonde! |
If I didn't go to the salon every 4-5 weeks I would be totally gray and I'm just not ready yet. I would almost have to dye it gray, because it would look so bad growing out. I just had it done today. Looks so much nicer. I don't think I would look good gray at this time. Maybe I could use that spray on until it is completely grown out.....when I'm ready.:) |
