How Do You Feel About a Public School Teacher Dress Code?

Okay, so my superintendant is coming up with a "teacher" dress code. Right now women are allowed to wear dressy clothes (i.e. dress pants, sweaters, etc) Mon-Thurs. and dress down on Friday. Men are the same (comfortable/casual) and dress down on Fridays. But, soon things will be changing.

I'm not sure what's gonna going on, but I believe he is getting rid of dress down Fridays (jeans, sweatshirts, sneakers, etc.). Maybe he'll go to more "suity" for men and women? Who knows.

Can you please tell me what you think of this whole thing in a public school setting? I can understand teachers not dressing like "hoochies" (short skirts, etc.), but I don't see anything wrong with the way we all are dressing already. I think he should be focusing on the education of our students, not what the teachers are wearing. What I really want to see is some cold hard evidence/studies done that shows that a teacher's dress code has a direct influence on students grades. I would love to read it if it were true.

So please, whether you agree with me or not, enlighten me please. Tell me what you think.

PS. We're not dressing like slobs by they way. hehehehe

PSS. I heard at first he was thinking about having women wear skirt suits! Helllloooo!!! What are we in the 50's? Nicole does NOT wear shirts to school! Next it would be that we can't get married, frequent pool halls, or wear bathing suits in public! :rolleyes:

Yeah, Right! I think this dude should dress up in his $2,500 suit and do lunch duty or wipe the throw up off his pants leg, or what about the snot from a wayward sneeze. Just ask him to spend ONE DAY IN KINDERGARTEN..... and see what he does with the dress-up code

Man. I'm a public school student. :p The last thing I worry about walking into the class room is what my teachers are wearing! It has no influence on my grades at all. (if it did....I'd be a straight F student. Some of my teachers are lacking in the fashion department!) ....What? I didn't say that.

My school is pretty much the same way. The teachers have to dress "nice" Mon-Thurs, then on Friday its casual.

Come now, you mean you wear your bathing suit in public? Like geez..... next thing you know you'll be driving a car..... and WANTING TO VOTE!

My sister teaches Kindergarten and has to be on the floor, kids throw up etc. She wears nice jeans and tops everyday. She teaches in Chicago. So wearing nicer clothes would be crazy. I think as long as the clothes are appropriate and they look nice they should be able to wear what they want.

i think over 1st grade they should dress nice they might get more respect

I teach first grade and I'd be upset if there was a specific dress code that I had to obide by. I am on the floor with my kids every day. I don't want to ruin my nice clothes. I do wear black pants and boots on occasion, but I'd much rather be in jeans because of the activities that I do with my kids.

I personally think it would simplify everything if they had school uniforms for everyone, students teachers and admin. It would end the "what to wear" issue, and there would me no "keeping up with the cool kids". Everyone would be at the same level.

If there is no uniform, then I would think business casual. If you want to be looked on as a professionl, then you need to dress like one.

I'm not saying that you don't, I mean "you" in general, not "you" specifically.

definitely no T shirts and torn jeans. Insisting on skirts would be sexist and would be challenged immediately.

Seriously, I don't see why this is even being debated. They should be more concerned with the kids than what the teachers are wearing. I don't see how what you wear changes anything. :confused:

uh oh, I think I'm gonna be the bad witch here! I'm 51, we all should know that by now...lol....and I think teachers should be dressed in skirts or dresses, men in dress pants, shirt and tie. Not because of the students grades, but because it is, in my opinion, a way to earn more respect. By the same token, I think the male students should be wearing dark pants and white shirts, female students should be wearing dark skirts and white blouses. I know that sounds really old fashioned, but there is too much concentration between the students on what they have or don't have, how much money they can spend on trendy clothes and those who can't afford it. I think most students would do better in class and teachers would look more like authority figures instead of mom or aunt Sue. This is just my opinion and I really hope I'm not bashed too much for this, but I've discussed this with other parents, teachers and bus drivers and I would say 90-95% feel the same way. Okay now......let me have it!!!

Yorkie3 I agree about kids and some not being able to afford the designer clothes - but women should not have to wear skirts. Working with kids is 100% different than any other work environment. Someone pukes daily. It's a germ incubator. Schools are gross - I work at one and I sure don't wear my nicest clothes there. I work in the office so I'm often the one calling the custodian. Or changing the toner in the copiers (daily!). Or carrying boxes when shipments come in or whatever.

I think teachers are fine if they are covered up (which you'd think they have the common sense to do!) I think they should be able to wear jeans and a school polo every day if they want - and gym shoes. They stand ALL DAY and I can't imagine doing that in dress shoes, even flats. I know I personally do my work best on Fridays when we wear jeans and I enjoy my job a whole lot more when I'm comfortable. In fact, the closest thing we have to a uniform is our spirit days when we all wear jeans and school shirts.

My mom is a teacher's aide. She takes her kids out for recess and helps them open their juice boxes and helps them with everything from paint and glue to blowing their noses. She also has clothes that she just wears for school because they get ruined.
