Hi Patti, I have two computerized embroidery/sewing machines, both were top of the line models when I bought them 8 and 10 years ago.. I have a Husqvarna/Vilking #1+ (with computer software, embroidery unit and tons of extra feet) -- after many long years of service that machine recently died-- I didn't embroider with that machine, didn't like the computer software, but you couldn't beat it for fine heirloom sewing. Because I didn't like the #1+ for embroidery, two years later I bought a Singer Quantam XL-1000 with the embroidery unit and computer software. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE my Singer. I have used and abused :D that machine fpr the past 8 years. It is now in the shop 'cause it was making "funny noises" and I didn't want to take a chance with it. I don't know anything about the Kennmores..... I have had bad experience with EVERYTHING that I have bought from Sears in recent history, so I don't even go in Sears anymore. Good luck! One suggestion -- if you can swing the $$ be sure to get a machine that is upgradeable. Many of the newer machines have memory chips that can be upgraded with the latest and greatest "goodies" as they come out. I am now "lusting" over a Singer Quantum XL6000, but it will have to wait until I build up my sales some :(. |

Thanks so much Chattiesmom. Patti |
I CAN SAY THEY ARE THE BEST my mom has one i dont know what the brand is, but i use it all the time, its soo easy, specially for all that detailing work where you can embroider names and letters and do little designs, i think for little doggie clothes, and little arts and craft ideas its the best thing, u wouldnt want an industrial machine, so that ones is great you can set it under your bed when u dont use it, or in a corner it is really a space saver as well:) |
Buying a sewing machine can be pretty daunting. It sure is a great investment but only if you can fully utilize it full potential. I have a wonderful bernina which bought (or should I say my hubby bought me) many, many moons away. It came with all the bells and whistles. However, I am not into embroidery and therefore only use it basically for sewing projects that require basic running stitches. I also have a Juki 4 thread serger which I absolutely love and does all my edging giving it a clean look. When I started sewing though I just borrowed my sister's brand new Montgomery ward brand sewing machine. I used it for about 10 years and did the job wonderfully. So if you feel you will maximize its use by buying a comprehensive expensive computerized machine, do so . . otherwise, a simple inexpensive good brand sewing machine will be just as good . . . then you can use the extra money to invest in something else :) Good luck on your hunt for the right machine  |
haha what ever happend to montgomery wards. ... |
hee hee "Monkey Wards" - I believe they all went out of business... I was talking with my mom over Thanksgiving about getting a sewing machine - only problem is, I don't know how to sew. I wish they had sewing classes for adults! I wish I paid more attention in Home Ec! :D |
Oh - and Chattiesmom - what is your business? I would love to get something with Buddy's name embroidered on it :) |

Too Funny This is too funny, I was just checking out the ones on QVC, HSN and America's Store. America's Store has some on sales, some free shipping and 3 pmts. I'm still looking :D |
It is a good time to buy! I have a Bernina that's about 15 years old and I still love it! It's computerized and I learned to make items with insertion lace, embroidery, etc. I made little baby christening gowns, toddler dresses and lots of other things. I don't have any experience with the Kenmore, but my Mom had one a bzillion years ago and loved it. I also have a Pfaff that belonged to my Mom and it's the machine that I learned to sew on when I was a little girl!! You gotta know that thing is really old ... it was top of the line then, but so was I!! :p Good luck and I would love to know what you decide to buy! ;) |
