Sewing help??? I'm just wondering if someone would be kind enough to give me "basic" instruction on how to begin to make a dog shirt? Just some basic tips, nothing to in depth, just something to get me started. I'm gonna learn to SEW !!!:D YAY! |
The best advice I can give is to get a simple pattern (McCalls and Simplicity both have them) and muddle through.....step by step. |
Now this is going to sound REAL stupid but....there will be a pattern for a dog t shirt? |
The books will have a craft section and that's usually where the different dogs stuff is (coats, beds, shirts, dresses, etc). Goooood luck! I bought my first sewing machine a few months ago and bought the patterns and those things are TRICKY!!! Not (IMO) for beginners. |
get a cheap one and tear it apart and then put it together. Sounds dumb but very good learning experiance:p |

yeah thats what im thinking about doing as well it is the best thing because you can just puta fabric under, put the piece that you took ontop and then trace ontop cut all the pieces and put them back together but make sure to not forget how it went and what peice went were, im soo glad my moms a professional seemstress i showed her a sweater and shes like is that all this fuzz is about that tiny lil peice of cloth, so i hope you get it and when ur done post some stuff up, and i know what you mean those t's and dresses are like  expensive |

I agree the patterns are quite tricky if you have never sewn. My advice would be, as yorkieangel said, to buy a cheap shirt that you like and take it home and examine it Draw out the pattern on a newspaper and start from there. If you have any more specific questions, you can PM me and I'll try to help. Good Luck and have fun. |
THANKS!!!!!!!!! I should have my machine soon, (fingers are crossed) so I'll be playing!!! |

I swear it is easier then using a pattern for a beginner because you get to SEE how it was together. when it is apart make a copy on tissue paper or any paper so you will have a pattern to copy from for later. MAKE SURE to REMEMBER to leave extra bits for seams. Just draw it a bit larger then the original |
Practice on old material like old sheets or old baby blankets or anything you can cut up because you aren't using it anymore:) |

Another suggestion - most fabric stores or sewing machine retailers will offer a beginners sewing class. One was offered free with the purchase of my last machine. Fortunately, I suffered thru this class in middle school and didn't require the classes offered. Also, at Walmart in the fabric dept. there is a very good book on sewing. You might want to check it out, especially if you anticipate sewing very much. |
Thanks everyone! I need all the help I can get!!!! I purchased the machine from another YT memeber so as soon as it gets here I'll go buy the book from Walmart and I'll take apart a t shirt. Thanks for everyones help.......I really need all I can get!! :p |
