Vent School nurse is an idiot i got a phone call from my daughter (She is 18 next week) this morning telling me she was having an asthma attack at school. This happened once before in middle school (5 years ago) and so I talked to the nurse. She said Aubrey was talking fine and had enough air but needed her inhaler. (The nurse was given one the beginning of school but had none for her today:confused: ) So I tell the nurse, I live a half hour away so please call 911 if she is in any trouble. She sounded like she was gasping for breath in between talking on the phone and I didn't like it. The nurse assures me she is really fine. She will call 911 if she needs to... I jump in my car with the inhaler and start speeding to school. I called my daughter twice to see how she was doing... I decide to call the office at school to tell them what is going on and ask for an administrator to go make sure my daughter is ok, and over see her care... the administrator calls me back ( I wish it was the principal but it wasn't) this guy says she is talking and joking and laughing so she is fine, just come with the inhaler. I was 10 min away at the time... I get there... Aubrey's hands are numb, and cramped in a claw like.. her face is numb, her eyes hurt, and she is having real trouble breathing. I say to the nurse...Call 911 now. I cant drive her like this... the nurse did not want to call and starts to explain why, and I say CALL 911 NOW! The ambulance comes, and they are asking how long she was in distress...It was a good 45 min. They are angry and shocked the school waited... I am so angry at them. The paramedics tell the nurse that just because you can talk doesn't mean you don't call 911... her heart was working over time, she was hyperventalating and it was pretty bad. Aubrey is fine now, but it is so scarey that she has this attack after 5 years with no trouble of asthma. Her inhaler is with her most times but she happened to switch pocketbooks and left it out. I find out later that she got hit in the chest with an elbow during a game and i triggered the attack. And the nurse sent her to her car to see if she had and inhaler!!! Then she decided Aubrey was ok and sent her BACK TO GYM!!! The gym teacher was so mad she walked my daughter back to the nurse!!!! Then the nurse had her call me!!!!!!!!!! Can you believe it??? Sorry so long...I;m just so angry with these people who are supposed to know what they are doing. I will meet with the principal and let him know what happened.   |
oh my god...thats so stupid!! She obviously has no clue about being a nurse..i'm sorry for what your daughter had to go through I hope she is feeling better. You should definitaly speak to a superintendent or whoever is incharge of that careless idiotic nurse. |
You have every right to be bad, damn mad. Dosen't anyone do anything right anymore. That nurse did not act even close to being professional. I certainly would write a letter to the board of education and make sure they know how much in distress your daughter was. That nurse needs to be reprimanded. I am really shocked that she did not responed fast and call 911 for precausion. Leaves one wondering what kind of hands our children are in during the day! I am so glad she is feeling better now. It must have been very frightening for her. |
What is the matter with that nurse could she not take her finger out of her ass and call 911? I'm am sorry your daughter had to stuff from stuidty  I'm happy you got there when you did thank the lord. What is the matter with these high schools? I thought the nurse was there to HELP. |
I would be livid!!!!! kICK A** and take names. |
Thanks for the support you guys are great! It was a really bad day. I posted another story about a dog being left in hot cars in general dicussion if you care to read it! I know the principal very well.. I used to work at this school. He loves my daughter and will not be happyI'm sure!!! |
Heres your sign!! (to the nurse) Me and Uncle Guido are on our way!!!! We'll get names later. That's just absurd. I hope your daughter is ok. Why are you so far away from the school? That may not have come out right. It just seems that 1/2 hour away is far. |
I am glad your daughter is ok, my son who is 6 has asthma as well, we worry alot with him. My cousin's son had a bad attack monday (they couldn't get his breathing regulated until today he just went home today. |

I would be talking with my lawyer..... Your daughter's life was endangered by incompetent school staff...... |
Sorry, your post really truly made me MAD!!! I am so very glad that all turned out ok and your daughter suffered no lasting difficulties. Sending both of you get well hugs :ghug: |
Sounds like with your story, that nurse is going to get fired. That school can't take another chance of something like that happening again. It sounds like you could have a good case against them. Glad to hear your daughter is okay. My daughter is in highschool and fortunatley she doesn't have any health problems, but I would have be absolultley livid!! |
when my sister was in high school her school nurse gave her an asprin for a stomach ache and told her to go back to class. she insisted she needed more medical care and refused to let her call our mother. she walked out of the school then walked 8 blocks home. when our mom saw her she called an ambulance. ellie had her appendix removed immediately. idiot gave her an asprin to treat an appendix. |
OH MY GOSH I am SO sorry I can't even BELIEVE THIS!!! You need to call administration and let them know this happened this is RIDICULOUS I had a teacher treat me this way when I was like 7, only I was throwing up, and she decided she didn't believe me. My mother ended up getting her fired because there had been previous reports. I'm so gladyour daughter is doing well! On my 1st day of my junior year at highschool I ended up passing out for no real reason except drinking and doing drugs. it was only like my 3rd class, and I felt really guilty because the girl sitting next to me was a freshmen and I had to ask her to walk me to the nurse! The nurse was amazing, I can't believe how well she treated me, even though I had sooo many school absences (if you are absent a lot they don't treat you very nicely), it took my mothe rlike 1 hour and 30 minutes to get there. She wanted to call the hospital but I was like "noo!" I can't believe this happened I really am in like shock I urge you to do something and talk to the principal, if he doesn't do anything, take it up with the administrative offices (idk if your district has this) |
I would be pissed! And dont think I wouldn't be calling the superindent also! I have had trouble with the schools not giving my children breakfast or lunch-AND THEY WERE ON FREE MEALS! I was irate! I called and let me just tell you they dont really care for me now! I get angry because we trust our children in their care and some idiots feel that some kids just make up stuff for the heck of it! So yes I would take further action! |
So sorry your daughter had to go through this!! Hope she is better now. I hope they reprimand the nurse. I'd be calling the principal, superintendent, and every single person on the school board. That nurse needs to go before she actually kills someone. |
That's really messed up. Especially the fact that you said to call 911, then they shouldve, no matter what they thought. I'm glad your daughter is doing OK. Theres really no other words to describe that nurse, except is she even a real RN? What an idiot! |
omg!!! Yeah I don't think I'd let this one down. I have asthma and I know what it feels like. It feels like your fighting for your last breath and your lungs feel like they shrink to the size of a pea........I am so sorry she had to go through this. When you are having an attack you cannot even think straight....so for that nurse to make her go to her car and send her back to gym.....very lucky she was not worse. Hopefully your daughter will grow out of this- I had attacks bad when I was younger and I rarely have one now. You defiantly need to speak with the principal. |
Here's the update... I met with the principal, and he listened to everything I said, and was taking notes... even stopped me to make sure he got it all... He had a meeting with the head of the fire and rescue right after me to talk to people out side of the school system and find as much out as he could. I saw the chef of fire and rescue witing when I left... The principal told me he would be talking to my daughter and to the gym teachers and the other people involved... He was not happy. He even said why not be on the side of caution. He would rather call rescue and have them say theres no emergency then to have one arise because of waiting... I am not planning legal action. My daughter is doing great today and we see the doctor to day after school. If she had lasting effects from this I would be looking into legal action but that is not necessary. I think the nurse is in trouble, and she is a nice PERSON but nutty when it comes to making decissions. I feel bad for her, we all make mistakes but when it comes to the well being and health of childen there is a responsibility to do what is right and she kinda blew it! I hope she learns from this... I wouldn't want to be her! Thanks for all your concern, it feels good to vent a little and have others agree with you! Your all so great to talk with! |
First, I'd just like to say I'm very glad your daughter is ok. I also have asthma, so I know how quickly the situation can go from bad to worse. I'm just glad you got there when you did!! You very well may have saved her life!! Second, I'd RAISE HELL!! Get names and documetn everything. This is totally unacceptable -- your daughter could have died. I know it's awful to even imagine, but it very well could have happened! This nurse deserves to be severely reprimanded and if it were up to me, fired. |
