Yam vs. Sweet Potato I was telling my aunt today that I'm making sweet potato pie on Sunday for Jim. She said to use YAMS instead of sweet potatoes. She said they taste the same but yams are much more healthy. Ok so my question is ... what the heck is a YAM? :D And do they taste the same as sweet potatoes? I want this to come out YUMMY tasting, so maybe I should just stick to regular sweet potatoes. Any suggestions? :p |
i dont know i always think it is a "fake" sweet potatoe in a can. lol I always use sweet paotatoes I dont like yams. |
From what I know Yams are the orange ones that you use for thanksgiving. But then again I thought they were the same thing just two names. I know there is another potatoe that tastes just like the yam but it's yellow/pale, maybe thats the sweetpotatoe. But I think Yams are MUCH better. THey have a sweeter taste to them and are amazingly moist. Yams are among the top favorites of mine. I've been eating them 3 times a week for the last month. I've been craving yams like crazy. They are the best (the orange ones). I'd go with that. Here's the difference from a website: Several decades ago, when orange-fleshed sweet potatoes were introduced in the southern United States, producers and shippers desired to distinguish them from the more traditional, white-fleshed types. The African word nyami, referring to the starchy, edible root of the Dioscorea genus of plants, was adopted in its English form, yam. Yams in the U.S. are actually sweetpotatoes with relatively moist texture and orange flesh. Although the terms are generally used interchangeably, the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires that the label "yam" always be accompanied by "sweetpotato." The following information outlines several differences between sweetpotatoes and yams. |
So Nobie, which is better to use for sweet potato pie? :D HELP! :p |

http://www.innabovetide.com/roomsandrates.html We're staying at this place and will DEFINETLY be making use of that claw tub. This place is built on the water, so our suite patio looks over the water. I'm so excited. |
Well...I guess I am dumb...I thought they were the same thing!:p And I have never had sweet potato pie. Is it similar to candied yams?? I am so confused:confused: |
Here ya go: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/p...eetpotato.html That should clear things up for you!:D |
I'm confused too. I have bought what I thought were sweet potatoes numerous times - they're always the orange ones. |
lol idk the difference buuuut yams may increase the chance of twins! lol |
Wow! You learn something new everyday......I never would have thought that today on YT I would learn that there was a difference between a Yam and Sweet Potato! Too funny!!! But I really didn't know there was a difference either!!! |
actually, the sweet potatoe is SWEETER! i make both every year because some prefer the Sweeter potato, others prefer the more bland one. However, YOU CAN add brown sugar to the Yams, the do sweeten them, but still, the sweet potato has a different kind of sweetness to them. |
i saw on tv that sweet potato is much better for you. I think it was on rachel ray show, im not sure. but they are both sweet |
well, if you've had the sweet potato And the yams. you can Definately tell the difference. |
you are correct. the sweet potato is healthier, Because the sugar is in them, NATURALLY, where in the yams, you tend to Add sugar, becasue it is not as sweet. |
I've had both, and I prefer sweet potatoes over yams. Yams aren't as sweet, they're actually a little bland. You have to add brown sugar to them in order to sweeten them up. I think the texture is a little different too. They are more orange in color. Sweet potatoes are sweeter naturally, so they are better for you. You don't have to add brown sugar to them, unless you want to add a little with some butter and cinnamon....yum! Sweet potatoes are darker in color. |

Yes, they are and less stringy....bigger too so it takes less. |
OK, now who was bored and sitting around and said, "I think I'll search for "yams" on YT and see what I can find..." and managed to dig up this thread. :p I opened it thinking to myself, "I don't remember talking about yams and taters with anybody this weekend..." :D |
Rofl! I bought one of each this thanksgiving .. a Yam and a Sweet Potato, so once and for all I will know what to call which. I like the deep Orange ones. One was yellow and had no flavor. I wanted to chuck it over the fence. NOW... I've forgotten which is which once again!!! DAG NABBIT! |
