Polymer Clay?? Awhile back, I posted for ideas for some of our children groups (crafts, fun, volunteer, etc). Someone mentioned crafts working w/ Polymer Clay. The clay that you bake. It is just like clay, that you can mold, roll out, cut w/ shaped cutters, etc. Has anyone used this and do you have any good ideas for what to make w/ it - instructions, supplies needed, etc? oops! wanted to suggest something to you When my girls (skin) were in elementary school I did a craft day...we made reindeer out of clothes pins...if you are interested in how I did it just ask and I will give you instructions! |
Sure........you can send that too. I haven't look into the polymer clay but (this is ironic), my daughters homeschool group is having four classes on making stuff out of polymer clay...so, we will get some hands on experience w/ that before I decide it is right for our group! Oh, we are in several different groups....the youngest is probably 3rd grade and the oldest is probably a senior in HighSchool. So......I wouldn't mind hearing any crafty ideas for anything....... |

I have used it often. If you want to make christmas ornaments you need to get the hooks to stick in ahead of time. You may need to glue after baking. tooth picks help hold heads arms and legs on, but after baking you may need to hot glue also. I bake my clay on a flat piece of card board for ten min. It seems to work out the best... Glass holds the heat to much and if I remember right metal didn't work much better for me. If you have a pasta maker they work great to flatten the clay. |
The polymer clay is a little pricey...espcially where you need it for so many kids...maybe check into the paperclay or make your own paper mache! for the little ones this would be good. you need wooden clothes pins...(not the clip ones) (you will need 3 per reindeer) googly eyes 1/8" ribbon (red and green) tiny red pom poms glue (I used 484 tacky, it's a white cement...works great!) fold the ribbon in half to make a loop (make sure it's long enough to hang). Put glue on the top part of the clothes pin, put the ribbon between the two clothes pins...now you have the body. take the other clothes pin and turn it upside down so you have a face and antlers, glue to the body...next glue the eyes on and the red pom pom and VIOLA! you have a reindeer! The kids loved making these and they could do most of it themselves. I have seen a small brown pom pom on the back for a tail but I thought it looked like a little turd so I left that off but you could also do this. Good luck...if you get one made show and tell! The instructor that is holding the polymer clay class is charging $9 per person that includes all the needed materials for that days project....and we are taking 4 classes....@ $9 for each of us!!!So, I figured the stuff cost alot. We might need to bypass this idea and look into the paperclay..... What is Paperclay???? |
