Home-made Costumes? Ok.. my godson is 2 1/2 this year and we wanted to take him trick or treating this year given that he can walk without falling every 5 mins now and can talk really well. Anyhow. my sister waited til the last minute to decide to take him and now all the costumes at the store for halloween are either too too big or too thick and its still sunny and hot here in Texas, so any ideas on some home made costumes for him? thanks guys!:D |
I did this for me a couple years ago.... Take a clear plastic trash bag, cut holes the bottom to put his legs through. Then you can bring the top up and tie it over his shoulder so it stays on. Blow up a bunch of small balloons, like water balloons and put them inside the clear bag with him. Voila! A bag of jelly beans! You can write Jelly Belly on the front with a permanent marker too. There's always the standby white sheet with eye holes cut to make a ghost. You can do a scarecrow with an old pair of jeans, flannel shirt, & straw hat. Put some extra stuffing in around him with quilt batting. Then put a little straw around his wrists and ankles. He could be a clown with a silly wig, painted face and any type of silly clothing. Oh gosh... I have tons of ideas for home made costumes! |

You can be creative with sweatpants! Use pink ones to make him a pig. Color his nose pink, Give him a pink curly tail with pink pipe cleaners. Or use gray (or white) and make him a mouse. Paint whiskers on his face, you can make ears out of felt and glue them to a headband. Or just buy some. Make him a tail out of rope or pipe cleaners. He could even wear shorts and a T-shirt for those ideas. You can make just about any type of animal that way. How about a Doctor, Fireman, Carpenter, an old lady, or a cowboy? |

AWE I love the piggy idea.. and SO EASY!!!!!!!:) |
When I was a kid, I was a dog several years. I wore black sweatshirt and sweat pants. Then, I wore a large dog collar, carried one of those large rawhide bones, and had my face painted like a dog with a big black circle around my ear. I remember I had some type of ears, although I am not sure how we made those.. maybe felt cutouts or something. It was cute.. I won a few contests with that one. |
My boys most fun costumes were always the home-made ones. The thrift stores are great for materials. We did hobos (off size clothes, some day old beard stubble with an eyebrow pencil, and a little bandanna tied pack on a stick); black cat (easy black sweats, a few whiskers and a triangular nose made with an eyebrow pencil and some black construction paper ears glued to a headband; cowboy (probably has a cowboy hat in his toy box (if not Walmart has them in the toy section); fireman (same as above); a pumpkin (orange sweats or pjs, then use that same eyebrow pencil or the face makeup to make big black triangles around the eyes, nose, and a grin); the tin-man is not too hard if you can find a large funnel and spray paint it silver. Then just buy the silver poster board to make a wrap around costume -- grey sweats can be under; Apirate is pretty easy too, a bandana for the head, earring, and a patch if he will wear it. I cut a small hole in an eye patch one year. Did not affect the look of the outfit, but gave them more confidence to be able to see out of both eyes. One of my boys tired of costumes and went to a Halloween party with a big "E" on his forehead -- he was E-male, yuk-yuk; I bought a face painting book once and we had fun with that several years -- they had all sorts of things like lions and tigers to paint and then they could just wear coordinating colored clothing; I sewed a Power Range Ninja outfit one year, but that was a lot of work! At 2 yo, I would look in the PJ departments too. This is making me nostalgic! Maybe I will dress Ben up after-all. It will have to be home-made because he is so little. |
1 Attachment(s) Here is one my daughter made for my grandaughter. She took two of those magic scarves, the ones that are like a big stretchy tube. She made one into the top and one for the pants. Then added the eyes and nose. She's not big on stuff on her head either so she put the face on her chest. |

Thanks... you gotta be creative when you have so many kids! lol |
Get some white sheets, cut them in strips and then wrap him like a mummy. Keep his "parts" unwrapped until the last minute and then do a quick wrap around the waist so that he can go potty. Have fun! |
good ideas! I love them all.... too bad he's not a girl... girls are soooooooo much easier...lol |
