Is there a secret To sewing on velcro? It seems to be difficult to set the tension. Well ,not really sure if that is it. I talked to one of the gals at the Creation Station here and she said velcro is very difficult to sew on because the thread can get tangled up in the loops on the velcro. Does anyone esle here that sews have a remedy. I'm tried of using the seam ripper and trying to get it right. |
i am just as curious as u |
well i to want to know this but let me give you one piece of advice i learned the hard way don't ever try to sew velcro with the sticky back it's a mess lol |
Velcro is pure evil, I'm sure. I use it alot and really it doesn't get much easier. Make sure that you don't use the sticky back velcro as that bungs up your needle. On the sides of the velcro is a small...2-3 mm wide area where you can put your seam...right down the sides of the velcro. It's the easiest way to do it. Your thread won't tear, etc. When you have to sew across, you can trim the velcro with scissors to cut off the sharp parts...right on the edge. Gosh..this is hard to explain. lol Hope it helps, tho. If you need more help..pm me. |
Do you have to sew the sticky back?? Won't it stay on by itself?:) |
no answers on the Velcro but am sneaking another thank you in here for the pretty yorkie blanket Debi - I love it !...I bet Connie or one of the sewers can answer this... |
thats why I use snaps, velcro is a pain to sew and it gets caught in the yorkies hair. |
I have only had problems when trying to sew the velcro to thick fabric such as fleece or fur. My suggestion is to just mess with the tension until you get it right. When adjusting tension only adjust about a half number at a time. Make sure you put the needle down by hand and turn the wheel by hand until the needle starts up again, then use the machine. At the corners I make sure the needle is down and then turn the fabric. Before using the machine always make sure your needle is on the up stroke. If you stop and start again, make sure the needles is on the up stroke. Occasionally I too have problems, but not frequently. |

I have never had problems sewing on Velcro. With the hook side, you just have to be careful or the "hooks" will cut the thread. As an alternative Velcro now makes an iron on that really sticks. The type of adhesive on the new type iron allows you to sew through it for extra hold without gumming up your needles. |

So, when you say upstroke do you mean completely out of the fabric, not piercing it? or just when it is starting up.... Thanks for helping.:) |

When I sew on the velcro I make sure that the one that faces outward is the rough one so that it won't stick on Topher's fur. Haven't had a problem with it yet doing it that way. |
Thats how I have been doing it. The ruff side away from the body. |

I did see the iron today at joanns. I wasn't sure if you could sew on it or not. |
I have to alter most of Gus's clothing and when it comes to velcro I get the sticky kind and sew it on by hand. |
