What do you guys think of this So as I mentioned before, I want another dog for Rocky to play with. I've decided on getting a female this time, hoping I don't have to worry about a dominance issue with another male. Plus, with smaller dogs I've noticed he loves the females, but doesn't care for the males. So I saw in the advertiser yesterday about maltese-mixes for sale for $350-500. I called the lady, wondering if she is a breeder or if this is a one time thing, because I want a maltese in the future (or a mix), but can't get one right now. She said she is licensed to sell puppies out of her home, and she doesn't breed gets her dogs through breeders...Kinda sounds like a petstore to me, but she sells them out of her home. She told me that she does have purebreeds available, and they are around $500-700, which is really good! So I guess this lady is like a third party pretty much. What do you guys think of buying from her? I would definitly see if she questions me for the puppy, and ask her questions about the pups. I do think she might keep them in her home, because when I called I heard barking in the background. What do you guys think about this ordeal here? |
I would be very cautious if i was you, so this lady doesnt breed the puppies herself, just buys them from a breeder and then sells them? I think it would be best really to buy from the breeder to cut out the middle person as it could cause problems if the potential puppy got sick with a herridatory illness. But i mean go check her out if you like, everything could be fine, just be careful as there is the ''dark'' side in the world of dogs :) |
idk.. maybe you can ask her if she can show you around, where she keeps the dogs and ect. Look how she keeps her dog and if her dogs look heathly.. if so, I dont see why you cant get one from her, as long as nothing looks fishy to you, about her or her place |
You can get a healthy dog from anywhere or anyone and you can get a sick dog from anywhere or anyone. Just go take a look around and do the necessary tests at the vet and make sure you have some sort of health guarantee where you can return a puppy if the vet check doesn't go well. As far as the sex goes, it really just depends on the dogs, but a male and female is usually a safe bet. With two males I would think both would have to be neutered. |
Personally, I wouldn't. Most likely, she knows nothing about the parents (size, temperments, etc.). |
She sounds like she's a broker. I dealt with a broekr who posed as a breeder who sold puppies out of her home also. I payed her, waited 6 months, ended up getting sent the wrong puppy, not the one I payed for, and he died 4 days after I got him from parvo. Brokers can be bad news! But maybe you should check it out in person, it might turn out to be great! I didn't check out the woman in person, which was my mistake:( |
If I do get from a breeder, instead of adopting, I want to make sure the breeder is a good breeder, not just to get money, and that they care about the pups. My thing with her is, if she gets the dogs from breeders, do the breeders not care about the puppies since they arent deciding who they go too? Unless maybe this lady does the screening herself, for the breeders. I'm definitly going to check her out before I buy, but these prices are soo cheap, it's hard to say NO...but if I have to I will. |
Definately sounds like a broker. I'd stay far away. Unfortunately the good breeders don't advertise in the paper. Stop by a local dog show (agility, conformation, anything) and ask people where they got their dogs from. Do you want a puppy? A lot of times you can get a retired female, just make sure she wasn't in a kennel her whole life. Trainers also tend to know good breeders and don't forget to check the shelters. It's hit or miss but sometimes a family will turn over their pregnant dog and then the shelter will have pups. |

Yes I do want a puppy, for training reasons. I want the puppy to get used to Rocky and people. I'll definitly ask my vet next time we go there. Thanks! Edit: If I adopt from a shelter, then I wouldn't mind a dog a little bit older, but it would still have to get along w/ all of us, and be trained. |
