Pre-Algebra Word Problems I need help with a word problem. Any math people out there? |
What is it?, i will try and help :) |
I can give it a shot too.......... |
Send it over |
A rental car with 300 miles for $24. 60 cents for each additional mile. If I have $32, how far can I go? I just need to know how to write the equation for the above. Also, on exponents, if you have 10^8 - 5^4, do you subtract the powers? Thanks for any help!!! :) |
I can't think of a single equation for the first one. It seems like you would need two parts such as: (32 - 24) = .60x * (32-24) divided by .60 = x (changed .60 sides so did the opposite) 8 divided by .60 = x 13.333333 = x * you would need parenthesis here to follow the rules of order (P,E,M,D,A,S) Please (paren) Excuse (eponents) My (multi) Dear (div) Aunt (add) Sally (sub) Then, x plus 300 = y 13.33333 plus 300 = y 313.33333 = y The exponent problem I don't see any way to simplify the equation since the bases are different. 10^8 - 5^4 = X 100,000,000 - 625 = 99,999,375 |

Did you also notice the title "Pre-Algebra"! Geez, my kids were taking Calculus before they graduated from high school. They were even receiving college credits for a lot of the courses they took. |

I got 180 miles :) I don't know if I am correct though |

$32-$24 = 8 So you have $8 to which you multiply the 60 cents to and get = 8.00 x .60 = 4.8 move the decimal over or just multiply 8 x 60=480 Now 480 miles minus the 300 = 180 ;) |
Way-to-go, Lacey's Mom! I did the math, and came up with the same thing you did. :p |
Just for curiosity sake, I'm giving this one to my son (9th grader) as soon as he gets home from school today. lol. ...He should know this stuff, especially since he's been getting these types of problems the past few years, but we'll see. lol. You know kids, he'll probably tell me he has no idea! |
Thanks for the input, guys. I was close....I guess. ha This is what I came up with. (Actually, one of several equations I came up with....don't know which is correct, though. ha I hate math!!!) 24 + .60x = 32 24 - 24 + .60x = 32 - 24 .60x = 8 .60x / .60 = 8 / .60 x = 7.5 300 + 7.5 = 307.50 miles |

I wish I could remember how to do the powers. There should be a chapter explaining that in your book it should have examples & be very clear. |
Thanks! I hope it is correct. I'll find out tonight. I've been stressing over this paper all week. This is only pre-algebra! What am I going to do when I get to the real classes?!! I am beginning to question my decision to go back to school! What was I thinking?! |
Good luck! Please post back the correct answer so we can all stop thinking about it! Oliver's Mom's got a good idea, ask a high schooler, it's normal math to them! KC Cutie, 7.50 miles at .60 mile would cost you 4.50 (4.20 for 7 miles, plus .30 for the 1/2 mile) and you have $8.00 to spend, so sorry your computation isn't correct. Always work the problem backwards - we ususally know the answer, but just don't know how we got it. |

I think your algebra looks fine here, the equation itself looks fine. I'm thinking though that going from your 4th to 5th line that you made a mistake in your math(I could be doing something wrong myself though). I think 8/.6 is 13.333 not 7.5. Before seeing your answer I did it like this 300+ (32-24)/.60 = X which is basically the same thing as yours just written in a diff order, but when you work it out it because of the orders of operation is it worked in the same order. |

Oh boy! Thanks for the reply. Back to the drawing board. This will give me something to do during my lunch hour. ha |
Look at Hickey's reply - I just looked at your answer and knew it wasn't right, but 8 divided by .60 is 13.33333 not 7.50 so maybe it was just a math error. I'll take a look at your equation again. I looked, your equation was just fine, just a small error in simple division! You've got it! |
Phew. Thanks for everything guys!! :D |
