air travel i just came home from a cruise vacation. i had a little stuffy nose and flew from florida to philly a 2 hour flight last night. my ear started to throb. when i got home i realized my ear never popped from the air pressure. i went to the doctor this morning and i actually damaged my ear drum. she said "don't you know you should never fly with a cold". i was like i only had the sniffles and needed to get home to go to work today. i just wanted to share. i never knew flying with a cold could cause permanent damage to your ears. maybe at the airport they should stop screaming about whether you have shampoo in your bag and tell you some real risks. |
Thanks for sharing that as i for one never knew you shouldn't fly with a cold:confused: Im really sorry you have damaged your ear drum, mine are damaged too from absesses (sp?) and tons of ear infections, i hate ears. I really hope you will feel better soon :) |
interesting. did you see an ENT or your PCP? did the doc actually do any tests on you or was it just a poke and a look in your ears? did your doc thoroughly explain HOW it happened or did (s)he just give you the "don't fly with a cold" talk? i would seek out a second opinion and/or think about changing PCPs. |
Wow! Sorry to hear that. Have you ever held your nose and blown? That's how I pop mine if they ever get stuck. Or keep making yourself yawn. So, what do people do? Change all their plans if they have to fly and catch a sniffle? That's bizarre. I have never heard that. Did they give you gum on the plane? Are you sure it wasn't a sinus infection? My daughter has blown her eardrums out several times from those. I think I would check into it a little more. I hope your ear gets bettet and you don't have any long term effects from it. |
i tried everything to make my ear pop. i chewed , swallowed water, blew my nose- nothing worked. the dr said it was totally closed and only antibiotics would open it up. it finally popped in my sleep. a co-worker thinks maybe i caught an infection from the headphones they give out to watch the movies. she swears they don't clean them. it's clearing up now.. thank goodness. |
