Volunteering for animals Has anyone volunteered at an animal hospital or a humane society? I'm going to start volunteering for the Humane Society shortly, and I'm really looking forward to it. There is an orientation soon, someone will teach us about the volunteer program. I think it may be a bit hard, seeing all of the animals who don't have a home, but rewarding at the same time. My mom and I are also looking into volunteering for a high-traffic animal hospital in the area together. Tell me about your experiences! :) |
I did way back when I was younger. Technically it was the pound where the dogs and cats were dropped off....All I can remember was feeling So bad for them - and bringing home 3 cats...one that lived with me for 16 years and was the BEST Cat I've ever had. I would love to volunteer for the humane society in Houston - I've spoken to Ernie from Animal Cops Houston about it - and he gave me lots of tips..... My problem is it's just so far away and in my current situation - I need to make money ...just the gas alone would cost alot....but if I could - I would. Good luck to you and your mom - you can't go wrong trying to help ....you MAY have a bigger animal population in your home though !! They're so hard to resist. |
My son and I volunteered at our local Humane Soc. We gave baths and walked the dogs, played with the puppies, did laundry, cleaned kennels. We "wish" we could have volunteered more, but it is just too heartbreaking when leaving for home and watching them take them to the "room". It was hard for my 15 year old son too, to come home so broken hearted and depressed every time we volunteered. It is so hard to see the look in their eyes. You walk in and they look so hopeful, you walk out and well, the tears are falling, so you can imagine without me going into detail. Now, we mostly donate things they need. It takes very special people to do the jobs they do. |
That was a good post Yorkie3.....We all CAN help in small ways - donating food - clothing - blankets etc is always welcome at the Humane Society - |
I looked into the no kill shelter by my house but I couldn't do it because it broke my heart. I am going to try and do it again one day. Bless all those who are strong enough to do it, |
