Landlord Venting I do not mean to offend anyone by this post. However if you are guilty of any of these issues that I mention, then shame on you. I Have spent the entire day cleaning up after tenants. There was a brand new refrigerator in this apartment and it looks like they took a hammer to the side of it and a knife to the door handel. All but one of the windows has broken glass, torn screens or the storms and screens are missing. I swear there must be a black market for storms and screens. What do they do with them, why do they even need to take them out. God only knows it wasn't to clean them. I raised 6 kids and in my entire life I don't believe I have ever LOST a storm or screen, and I can count on one hand the number of torn screens or broken windows that I have had. They must play baseball in the house. The bathroom door is full of holes and one closet has a huge hole in the drywall. All of the flight fixtures are missing globes And there isn't a light bulb in the place. And they didn't even give me back my key, so I had to crawl through a window to get in, which wasn't difficult since they were all broken or missing anyway. Why don't people have more respect for other peoples property. |
I'm sorry this had to happen to you. :( I've been living in this same apartment since I started college at 18. We aren't allowed pets, but since my landlord knows I take care of this apartment...he lets me have my 2 dogs. I think some people are just heartless! it's sad! :thumbdown |
I'm sorry to hear that. I just don't get this kind of people:confused: Honestly, someone like this must be out of their mind. Why do people waste their energy like that? Just go and do something usefull!!! Like a JOB or something DUH |
That is horrible!:thumbdown People should have more respect fro others' property! Things like this upset greatly! |
We have rental houses and everytime someone moves its like an explosion went off in the house...I don't understand it either, I guess some people just don't care. |
This is the reason why me and my sister sold our rental we got so tired of all the clean ups and complaining when they are the ones that broke and dirtied the stuff  |
I am so sorry!! That is why I've always sold rather than rent!! I really hope that you got a security deposit!! |
I think thats every landlords question! I just dont understand how people can live like that and allow someone to trash a place like they did! Unfortunetly it happens everyday, I guess thats the downside of renting out places. Do you do a credit check on all your tenants? Check references?? Sorry you had to go through all that today. |
I hear your pain. I had 6 rentals for 15 years & had to sell because I had enough of the pigs. My income was cut in half when they sold, but it was worth it to me. This one womon told me she has 2 kids but when she move in there where five. Her kids broke two windows in a month which I paid for, I then informed her that anymore broken windows she is responsible for ( where's the incentive to stop breaking windows if I keep paying) And she was po-ed about that.I can probably count on one hand the number of clean tenants I had in 15 years. I found the worst were young girls. I only asked from my tenants, pay your rent, keep it clean and no loud parties. You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find someone that could do this. Good luck with yours. |
sounds like they trashed the plcae on purpose? can't you press charges for property damage!? |
Did you make them pay a security deposit before they moved in? If you did, I hope they don't expect to get it back! How rude! |
Sorry to hear what you're going through, I feel your pain! We had such a mess cleaning up our 1 rental property after the first tenants moved out! It jjust wasn't worth the aggravation and expense. We had a security deposit, but truly, it came nowhere near to covering the expense of cleanup. We almost gave it back, because the guy became so irrational and threatening over the phone, we were afraid he'd come back and trash the place more! 1500 sf of replaced carpet (due to cigarette burns and dog pee...and they told me they weren't smokers), a new refrigerator, 3 new lighting fixtures (seriously, where do the go?) and four replaced windows later, we sold it. Never again! |
My Dad used to have rent houses and the issues that you talk about are the exact reason he got out of it. People just have no respect for other people's property. |
I have never been a landlord but my daughter and son-in law are. He is a contractor and she an interior designer among other things. Thank god they both know how to put a house back together because many times they had too. I can not understand how people were raised. I think the tenants are jealous of what the landlord has and just wrecks everything to prove it. Doors hanging off of hinges, windows broken, new carpeting full of stains, broken toilets, filth everywhere. I could cry for them sometimes with the messes they have to clean up. I feel for you and understand your fury. Nice to have the extra income but is it really worth it? |
I'm so sorry this happened to you. Somepeople are just pigs. :thumbdown |
Yeah, people don't care when it isn't their property. I am lucky, my tenants are ok, but their kids are very messy and I already found a hole in the wall! But, they are going to rent from me for a long time, so I don't have to worry about cleaning the place up for a while. |
If you keep the security deposit high, they will make an effort to clean the place up when leaving because they will want their money back. We are in the process of moving out of an apartment, which is not trashed one bit, but I will go over and vaccuum this weekend and make sure everything looks the way it did a year ago when we started renting because I want my 600 dollars back. Not that I would have broken the windows, or ripped the screens apart had the deposit been lower, but now I want the place to look like it can be rented the next day, so the landlord will give my money back after we walk him through the house and return the keys. |
Any time I rented I tried to make sure the house looked better when I left than when I went in it! I had always gotten my security deposit back. Until the last house I lived in. I paid a $450 deposit and she wouldn't let me have a dime of it back. I couldn't find one of the keys to the doors and she said she had to replace all the locks in the whole house because of the one key. A guy we knew moved in there after me and she hadn't replaced any of the locks. Go figure. |
That is Sad How awful that people just don't care. I rented for a number of years and I never treated people's property that way. However I had a real A*&H(**e for a landlord the very last place I rented. I got Remmy 3 weeks before my lease was up and he knew I was moving out. He charged me the FULL pet deposit for three weeks! I did not even have to tell him that I had a pet but decided to do the right thing. I thought that was CRAZY, but I paid it. Then when I moved out he decided to sell his condo. There were scratched on the kitchen counter. The counter was made out of laminate. The buyer did not want laminate but wanted it replaced. Guess what he replaced it with...and I paid for the whole thing. A butcher block counter top...which is way more expensive then laminate. That guy was a real JERK! |

Yes you can, but when they don't have anything, you're wasting your time. You can't get blood out of a turnip |
