I'm dying to know... Do you guys get sheep trials in the US? It's a rainy sunday afternoon in NZ and I don't have pay tv so of the 5 tv channels I have to choose from 2 are running motorsport, one running rugby, one is a music tv channel and the last channel has got sheep trials playing! I was just wondering if this is a kiwi phenomenon? Sheep trials is where a farmer gets his dog do all sorts of neat sheep herding stuff. Dixie's fascinated by the whistling (which is how the farmer communicates to the sheep). Dougal once had a go at sheepherding. He ran around and around barking and got them in a tight bunch then the head sheep got sick of this annoying barking thing and took a couple of steps towards Dougal and at that point you could see him think "yes, well, ok - - I think my job is done here" and he legged it out of the paddock. SOOO FUNNY |
no i haven't seen anything like that but isn't tht movie babe about that? with the sheep herding piggy? |
I am not familiar with sheep trials but I am in a very busy area on the East Coast maybe in other parts of the country they have it. |
Never heard of it here but we don't have many sheep in Florida. Sounds interesting. What kind of dog do they ususally use, Border Collies? |
We have Direct TV in our RV and this summer I noted a rural channel (that I do not get with my cable at home) and they had different things like that. I don't recall sheep trials, but I do recall them showing different sheep hearding dogs and explaining how they worked the sheep, cutting horse trials, and things of that nature. I didn't watch the channel very much, so maybe I misssed the sheep trials :D It sounds like it might have been interesting!!! |
Hi guys thanks for your responses. In NZ it is done with "Huntaways" (which I think is a peculiarly Kiwi breed) and with Border Collies (but strangely enough no Yorkies :eyetearss) Kiwi farmers also use cross bred dogs where the dog is not bred for physical traits but for their herding ability. And a dog from good stock that's been trained by someone who wins the sheep trials can go for NZ$5000!! There are all sorts of different trials but it is pretty much just what Babe did in the movie. But as I thought it is only in NZ that they stick sheep trials on the free tv on a rainy sunday afternoon! |
