Anyone who is creative, I need ideas... 1 Attachment(s) Peppi, my cocker, is in need of a new bed, her last one was just ruined by another dog of the family. Soooo instead of buying her one, I am going to make her one. The only problem is, she only likes those pillow beds, she donut like donut beds or any of those type of beds, just the ones that are just like big pillows. I think she only likes this kind because she is older and can't climb in and out of them?? Anyways I was going to pick up a mattress or foam for her and sew her a bed. But... those rectangle pillow beds are so plain and ordinary and just kinda boring. I want something fun or even something fancy but still in the same shape. I am getting Trixie that adorable pink Queen bed and I really want Peppi to have something nice, definately girly, and possibly fancy oh and I thinking maybe some lace?? But it has to be a slip cover where it is washable and I can just slip it off the mattress when it needs washed. Oh and something afordable, not too pricey. I sure do ask for alot don't I?? :D So does anybody have any ideas or have pictures of what I could possibly do?? I would soooo appreciate it, she deserves a bed, and if it were not for the fact that she only likes one style, I woulden't have a problem. Here is a picture of the type of bed I am talking about. See how plain and ordinary it is?? I want something different, girly, more fancy than plan, not too fancy to where I can't afford it though!! Like I said I need ideas!!! |
What about making a box pillow and using piping or cording around the edges? Loki's much smaller than a cocker, but I bought a box style floor pillow from BB&B when they had their college dorm stuff on sale last year. It's the squishiest, comfiest pillow :D My mom helped me and we made a slipcover for it with some flannel fabric with bones all over it. It's time for a new slipcover, and I'm looking for ideas too. Loki doesn't care what it looks like, so I think next time it will match our bedroom :-) Here, I googled this and found a picture similar to what I used. The one I used was thicker though. These are really pretty though. http://www.bizrate.com/bedding/oid326388248.html |
Yeah, I suggest the box pillow type, where you add one more dimension to it, and use some type of fringe or cording. That would make it look really nice. And since she is an older dog, she probably won't chew on the fringe. |

There are so many wonderful fleece patterns to choose from these days you don't even have to be too fancy . . . besides, the more fufu, the more for them to chew :D |

I have the SAME problem that you do. My boxer needs BIG beds which are usually extremely expensive which I wouldnt mind paying except chloe tends to sometimes potty on Pennys bed:( . I guess she is marking her territory and the only place she would ever do this is Penny's bed. So Ive made her a few beds. But the last and final think I did for a bed has been the best yet. I got a HUGE round papasan cushion from Garden ridge. Penny loves it and I got it in sale for $10 which is insane. And becasue its so durable, I just steam clean it and it cleans well. For some reason chloe doesnt even try to mark this bed. Maybe she grew out of that, but either way it has been the cheapest, most durable bed and Penny really enjoys it. You could get a round papasan cushion and make the fleece covering to go around it to look like a cute bed that you want :) |
We had a papasan chair and the base broke, so we got rid of it. But before we did I put the cushion on the floor for Loki. We called it Loki Island. He brought all his toys there and claimed it. I felt so bad when it had to go, but he's a tiny dog and it was HUGE! Great idea for a big dog! Also, if you are stuffing something it's cheaper to buy bed pillows on sale and take the stuffing out of them than to buy stuffing at the fabric store. |
I have been thinking about making a big SQUISHY pillow bed for my Yorkie kids and a bigger one for Boo the Boxer. Chizzie's kids tend to "steal" Boo's beds :) |
Have you looked at Wal Mart in the pet department, they have a real nice fleece pad for them to sleep on, this one is really nice for older pets, suppose to be cooler in summer and warmer in the winter months. I also seen them in the pet store but they were at a much higher price tag,and was the same thing. I am thinking of getting Baby Blessing one there at Wal Mart and cut it in half so one piece is in our vehicle and the other I can put in her little bed. One can easily make a cover for them in a real cute fabric. Patti |
1 Attachment(s) I've attached a picture of Levi is his bed that I made him and also the directions for making it. It is taken from the shooters doghouse website. How can I make a comfortable Cuddle Bed for my Yorkie? Get 1 1/2 yards of 60 inch material. A little stretch to the fabric is ok, but not too much or your bed will take too much polyester stuffing and not stand right. I prefer a soft velour, or imitation suede. You will need 4 bags of 20 oz stuffing and about one yard of 1/2 inch batting. This will make two cuddle beds. Cut two 15 by 16 inch ovals, or two 16 inch circles cut across the 60 inch material (folded over to 30") for a 16 inch rectangle. Lay the 16 inch circle right side up and pin the folded rectangle selvages to the outside of the circle to the outside bottom of the circle, being careful to keep the gathering inside what will be your sewing line. Cut off excess part of the rectangle. Place the other circle of material Right Side Down on top of the pinned rectangle and pin it together. Now sew the whole sandwich together leaving a 4 1/2 inch opening to turn it out. Turn it out. Sew the ends of the rectangle (which will be the sides of your bed) together. Then insert a flat piece of batting cut to fit into the bottom of the bed and sew it "quilting and zig zag fashion." Now just stuff the sides with Polyester Stuffing and then whip stitch the three pieces together, bottom two and one side of the side, and then blind stitch the top of the opening to the bottom of the bed. Walla!!!!! It's great -- They love them! I always give one away with each puppy that leaves here. It really helps them to adjust and people wash them again and again and tell me that the kids really love their "favorite" bed! |
2 Attachment(s) I got a bedframe that the pet store I sew for was going to throw out and it sat around here for a year or so before I finally decided to sew a mattress for it. I can't remember what this material is called, but you will see it in the pic. Maddie loved it and my sister's dog, Scarlett spent a few days here and she would cuddle up in it whenever she got a chance...when Maddie wasn't in it. I had to make one for Scarlett too. Since then, my daughter's little pups have been here and they also love it! Heck...I love it...the feel of it and so do my grandsons who made me promise to make them one. I just sewed it like a pillow...got some soft batting and then sewed the outside as a slipcover to make for easy washing. Here's some pics...not a great pic of Maddie as she was sick in bed at the time. The other is of darling little Scarlett. I made this to go in the bed frame, but it works just as well on the floor. I got the fabric at JoAnn's...regular $15 per yard, on sale for $5 per yard! |
Thanks everyone for the ideas!!! I haven't figured out what I am doing yet but when I do, I will be sure to tell you guys and post pictures. I like the box pillow idea, I have to keep that in mind, I was thinking of doing that and then putting lace on it?? So many options, so many things I can make, it makes it all the harder to decide what I am going to do. Oh and Peppi is 8 years old and chewing is not an issue at all, she was never a chewer!!!! Keep the ideas coming!! Thanks a bunch, you guys are great!!! Quote:

For a smaller dog you could always get the papasan ottoman cushions ;) Those are much smaller |

That is adorable, I did a similar thing for a cheap metal frame bed that I got from a catalog (I cant think of the name of it but its very similar to the ABC catalog). That pink fur like material is super cute though! |
