Help with momma cat with kittens..... The momma cat and kittenS are here at my work. They are living in one of our open sheds where we keep some of our job wire. The cat has been around for about a year b/c there is a restraunt behind my work and she like the dumpster. Well, the owner has just noticed a couple kittens in our building so I took a bowl of water out there. Well, the kittens don't even have their eyes open yet. So I still left the water for them mom. I want to go and get some food after I get off work so the mom has plenty to eat and doesn't have to eat scraps out of the dumpster. Should I get Cat or Kitten food? s there anything else that I need to get for the mom to help her with the kittens. Thanks for the help. Crystal |
Does anyone have an idea of how young they are if their eye's arn't open yet??? |
Get her kitten food it is higher in protein & she will need it ...they will not open there eyes untill they are 2 more like 3 weeks, and will quit nursing around 4 or 5...can food would be good for her too...I use to give our stray can and leave dry out for her.....:) |

I would try to call some rescues and see if someone will take them. It is kitten season and some aren't going to want to, but you might get lucky. Those kittens might get into trouble if the mom is leaving them to find food. The kittens will also keep going into the cycle of breeding and making more kittens that aren't being taken care of running the streets. The best thing for them is to try to get them and if possible the mother to a rescue. At least they can get medical treatment, an IV if possible, shots, fixed, and a loving home. |
I think they are less than 1 1/2 weeks old. I have had 15 kittens born here to stray cats. I have been up to my eyes in cats this summer. Finally I am down to 3 adults and 4 kittens. Anyway my kittens have always opened their eyes by the end of the first week. Not wide open but you can see their eyes. |

Good job helping those kittens out. I would try to find a rescue or ask around and see if someone will foster them. I don't know about NC, but over here we have been having an extraordinary HOT summer, it's gotten up to 113 degrees. I would feel so sorry for any animal and it's babies outside in that weather. Good luck. |
Well, my husband just went outside with me to look at them and he said something is wrong with them. Their probly about5 or 6 weeks old and the syes arn't just shut. There's a mucas that's making the eyes shut. One of the kittens is ok though... The owner said he was going to call Humane society to come and get them or we'll take the kittens to them if they want.... Thanks everyone |
It sounds like they might have some kind of eye infection. I hope the humane society is able to get them the medical attention they need. I hope they don't end up blind or anything. In that case I'm happy that you found these guys and you're doing something. They would have never had a chance out there. Keep us posted on the rescue! Good job in helping these babies out! |

Animal control is sending someone in the morning to pick the kittens up. At least they will be in good hands and out of this hot weather... Crystal |
Try washing the kitten's eyes with a warm saline solution. I think you use 1 teaspoon of salt to 1 quart of warm water :) Good luck! You are a kind soul for taking care of these needy babies and mommy. In our organization there is an organization called Sterile Feral. It has a capture-release program. They will capture will domestic cats spay/neuter them and release them back to the same location where they were captured. The stipulation is that the cats must have a mentor who will feed them. Before release the cats are wormed, given 3 year rabies vaccines, feline lukemia vaccination and whatever else it is that cats need. :) I have four in my barn that I "adopted". They are semi-wild. They do thier job well -- keep the yucko plucko mice away AND the huge bonus is that they don't want to be touched. :D I am not a huge fan of cats |
