She doesn't make minimum wage? that upsets me but at almost every restaurant the waitress has to "tip out" to the bus boys and such as much as you think you should at most though |

Check out this chart from the Dept of Labor. It shows all the minimum wages for tipped employees by state. |
Clarification Okay - my son is home now, so I just asked him. Anytime you get tips as part of your job you are not required to be paid minimum wage, but you must be paid at least $2.12/hr. It is up the business' discretion just how much they pay you. He didn't get minimum wage when he bussed tables either! Hope this helps!! |
well I was about to say this but then I looked and it was affermed I guess I thought that wage was pretty low because in California minimum wage is 6.75 always |
Thanks for the info.. I guess I'm just culture shocked. $2 just seems so.... |
When I worked at Olive Garden, the servers made $2.13, the bussers $6 & the hostesses $6.50. It was common curtisy for the servers to tip the bussers because if you have good bussers you can make good tips. The server however did not have a set amount to tip & could tip as they saw fit, I believe they also tipped the bartenders. Us hostesses didn't get tips unless someone was really happy with our seating. I had an older gentlement tip me $5 bucks one night because I kept him company as much as I could why he waiting for the rest of his party...it was more than he tipped his server :( |
Thanks for confirming this Quote:
Yes, minimum wage is $6.75 ALWAYS. Glad to see that our State Calif. has this law for all it's workers. Thanks for the chart posted by Kelly V. Interesting. |

She is the only waitress and the other 2 girls that she works with is the cook and a cashier, and get this, they also have a inside lobby and the cashier waits on the few tables they have inside, but she DONT share her tips, she keeps them ALL! I just think that she should not have to share them and why is my daughter only making $2.15 and the cashier is making min (5.15) and is waiting on tables and keeping her tips. something is fishy!!! |
if this continues i think you should discuss something with her boss or maybe tell her to find another job. when i or my family is in a resturant like applebee's or something the tip we leave on the table is always for our server. it seems like your daughter is working in a small resturant type enviornment but i don't agree with how she is being treated, i feel she is being cheated out of her money. if this continues maybe you could suggest something to the manager if she won't do it first. i think you should suggest that the servers put every tip they get after the first $20 into a jar inside the resturant and at the end of the day have everyone around and have it counted, and evenly dived among everyone. i worked in at a concession stand at a pool last summer and whenever we got tips we would count it and divide it evenly among everyone and it worked out fine. |
OHHH WEEEE This post brings back memories. I worked ALOT of places and YEP alot of states you only get 2 something an hour plus tips...It's LEGAL. I also want to say as I got older I got WISER I started demanding more money for base pay or I wasn't taking the job....LOL I always got it too. I also did alot of bartending in nightclubs and this one time they decided we were going to SPLIT tips....that lasted about 2 shifts and I told them I was Quitting if it wasn't going to be keep our OWN tips. They went back to the old way:p JEEZ I was making like $350 a night in tips and the other girl was like $100 a night so NO WAY I was splitting:mad: Tell your daughter to tell them to SHOVE it:D |

Missy, people in your state need to petition to get the wage law changed. Does your daughter sew ? Does she have any hobbies? Maybe she could try to get a job with a fun place like Michaels or a hobby store, is there any near you? How many hours is she working a week? Maybe the owner will relook at it like this without her being there as a waitress, they wouldn't have the orders to cook and the cashier wouldn't have the bill to charge customers so looks to me like there wouldn't be a business to worry about who gets what. I wish the best for your daughter, by the way Missy what is your daughters goal in school and does she plan to go onto college and major in what? Patti |

The thing is she does enjoy it there so I just dont know. No we dont have a Hobby Lobby or even a book store here, when she turns 17 more will open up for her and she is eager to work, I'll give her that, she almost had a job at a coffee house and she was so excited but the man hired someone else! I doubt she will go back there next summer and I'm glad of that. She does see my point and she knows it's wrong but she is not the type of person to start something. She is not really into school, she goes and thats about it, she has talked about going to a local college but thats as far as it has went. |
My Daughter 1 Attachment(s) here is a pic of my daughter, just wanted to share it with you all! her name is Branda |
Wish we had energetic young folks here in our area, we would be happy to hire one and pay a minimun wage, can't find any one to do. Maybe Branda could look into working for elderly people and get paid minimum wage and in doing so be appreciated at the same time. Many elderly people can use help in one way or another. I know for myself it is getting harder for me to keep up. What does she think of this suggestion? |
