How to clean your house? Ok, I've bought several books trying to figure this out, but they all seem to lack...how often to do it? Anyway, if anyone has read a book that tells you what to do room by room and how often, like daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, etc it would be greating appreciated! Growing up my mom took care of everything and now I'm married with a new house and have no idea what to do and when to do it! |
frequency all depends on how messy the house is . . I don't have little kids anymore, just furbabies and since I have a husband that is such a neat freak, our house is always very clean . . .although lately dust have been building up quite a bit as I have not had a chance to vacuum in a while :D |
I have 5 kids, so my cleaning gets done on a daily basis! When I was newly married, I did the major stuff once a week. Like, the vacuuming, dusting, window washing, etc. If you pick things up daily it doesn't leave a mess. I still only dust once a week and clean windows probably once every other week. So I say, just go with whatever you feel needs done! |
Please let me know if you find out!! I am a terrible wife when it comes to the house. Luckily hubby doesn't seem to mind! :p |
Congrats on the marriage and the house. I hate to do housework. But my hubby and I are both pretty neat - so things get put away after they are used, laundry is always folded and put away as soon as the dryer buzzes, and dishes and cooking items go right into the dishwasher following a meal. I "clean" once a week - that means scrubbing the tub, rinsing tile, scrubbing toilets, sinks, vaccuuming, dusting, mirrors cleaned. Windows only get done as needed. Outside windows get done Spring/Fall. Floors are washed about once a month. |
I clean once a week since it's just me and my fur babies. :) |
Maid!!!! That how we all should clean house. I clean the house once week, but I pick up almost everyday. |
I'm a cleaning finatic. I mop my floors at least twice a week (Wednesday night and Sunday night) or more if needed. I clean my kitchen counters after I cook every night (with clorox bleach spray). I scrub my bath tub once a week. I do the toilet at least 3 times a week. And sometimes I fill up the tub with HOT water, throw a whole gallon of bleach in, and leave it until I come home from work. Then I rinse it out. I also do that with the toilet -- I throw a gallon of bleach in, close the lid and leave it until I get home from work. I do all the mirrors once a week. I vacuum twice a week (Wednesday night and Sunday night) or more if needed. That includes moving the couch and computer desk to vacuum behind it. I dust once a week. I clean the ceiling fans once a week (you'd be surprised how dirty they get). I try to clean the windows (front and back) every month but sometimes I slack on that. It's just such a pain in the butt. :) I put up every day. I never leave dishes in the sink over night. I don't even own a draining board because I think it looks messy -- especially when people let their dishes pile up. I don't like clutter. So I dry my dishes on a dish towel and then put them away immediately. I also clean my stove and microwave after each time I use it. I take my china out of my china cabinet and dust it off once a month. Hubby and I are seriously thinking about hiring a cleaning lady. :) |
You can decide when things get dirty in your house by experience. The houses and the habits of people that live in them change things significantly. Initially I would suggest dedicating a weekend and cleaning everything regardless of how dirty they are (even if they look very clean). Then you can keep an eye on the dirt levels for a while and create the schedule that fits your need. But, here is a checklist of things to clean, which you can print: http://www.mrscleannw.com/tips/cleaning-checklist.html And here is a bunch of useful tips: http://www.mrscleannw.com/house-cleaning-tips.html I have found this website very helpful. It is created by a professional maid service, but they are not trying to sell you anything. I hope it helps! |
Congradulations to you both. First of all, congradulations to you both and also on getting a new home. We put things away and never got into a clutter habit :) :) I do whole house cleaning once a week, vacuming, dusting, this includes straightening closets and dusting of light fixtures and ceiling fans. For me the kitchen and bathrooms are the two that need frequent cleanings during the week they get a floor cleaning every other day, like to hang my bath rugs on clothes line to air out when I am doing them. With so many new cleaning solutions out it makes it a breeze. Doing our laundry is a daily thing for me, with automatic washer and dryer how much easier could it get. I do the self cleaning oven once every two months, but wipe and clean as I use it, that is enough for just the two of us. I do dishes by hand (even though we have a dishwasher) place on a towel, dry, put away. I always like to get up to a clean counter and sink, when I am ready to fix breakfast just seems to start the day off better. House cleaning doesn't really have to be a chore, I listen to my favorite music (usually Allen Jackson :) or one of the others from my long list ) I think about good things and drink something refreshing as I am working (usually lemonaide or pepsi). One evening once a week to bathe and groom Baby Blessing, and have a long play time with her afterwards for the both of us. Try to start out with it not being a chore and it won't be something you dread to do. Enjoy your home and congradualtions again to you both, God bless you with a long, happy, healthy life together. congrats! Congratulations on your new life. I actually got married exactly 1 year ago (happy anniversary to me!! lol) and the best way I've found to maintain a clean house is to have a schedule for everything. Example, Mondays are laundry day, tuesdays i clean bathrooms, wednesday, kitchen (refrigerator, microwave, mop), etc. Anyway, everyday I still pick up little things, of course, but having major tasks taken care of on a schedule has REALLY helped me. Hope this helps a little. Good luck! :) |
thank you all for so many tips! I think I will just start experimenting with them all until I find something that works:) |

Hmmmm new wife, and a home to clean. 25 years ago when we got married, my Mom asked my husband "I don't know what you want her for, she dosen't cook, clean, or do windows. Yep, I still don't, I have a house cleaner come in M-W-F :) :) :) :) I didn't even know they have how to clean books. But I did want to say Congratulations to you both, enjoy your new life. After 25 years, five childern, and 2 Grandchildren, I'm still as happy as I was 25 years ago.:2hearts2: :2hearts2: :2hearts2: :2hearts2: :2hearts2: :2hearts2: |
1 Attachment(s) The best thing I've done is made myself a list. Honestly, I know it sounds dumb but it really helps. I'm horrible at keeping up with everything. This way I know what to do and it only takes a little bit of my time each day, instead of putting everything off for one day. I keep my list on the fridge so I see it throughout the day. I've included my list to give you an idea. I probably need to add a couple of things though. It may be a bit difficult to figure out, along the left are the days of the week and across the top it says which week to do it or every week. Like at the bottom on Sunday, if its in the first column then I do it every Sunday and if its in the second I do it just the first Sunday of the month and the next column is the second Sun and so on. Try it, for now you can just put on it what you think and later on you can add or delete as you find what works for you. I've gotten my friend doing this and she absolutely loves it. Obviously there are things that you do every day like putting up the dishes or wiping down the counters after cooking etc but this helps with everything else. Hopefully you can make out my list at least somewhat. Another perk to the list is that sometimes hubby will walk by and see that the floors need to be vacuumed or what not and just do it, sometimes.... |
