Need Help With New Computer=thanks
 
Our son got us a new computer yesterday, I was using Netscape, this one is set up with Explorer, all of a sudden I feel like my brain is in a whirlwind, what I was capable of doing with my old pal I can't seem to figure out with this one. Son went home this morning so I am more less on my own now :( I replied to a posting earlier and wanted to delete some of it in quoting but was unable to figure out how to do that, copy paste delete, appreciate any help with that. Thanks a bunch, Patti
I know this is going to be great once I get the basics of using explorer but oh my in the mean time I really feel like it is beyond my reach in getting going with it.

Hmm, not sure what you mean. Copy and paste should be the same in Netscape and Explorer. The easiest way is just highlight text and hit control C to copy, then control v to paste. To delete, highlight and hit delete key.

I have a feeling that's not what you're asking. Sorry.

Woohoo! Nice job. I used to use Netscape all the time but now prefer explorer. They do the same thing, just in annoyingly different ways at first.

Netscape and Internet Explorer are very similar to use, though they do look a bit different or even very different depending on how old your Netscape version was. I hope I understand your problem and I assume you have a Windows computer, if not, just ignore me.:D

In Internet Explorer you would highlight/select the text you want to change in the way you would normally do it. If you are accustomed to using CTRL+ something you'll find the key combinations are identical.
If you prefer to use the mouse rather than key combinations, select EDIT on the bar at the top. Because you've highlighted something you'll find COPY and CUT are now in black so you can click on either of those. Now put your (blinking) cursor at the place where you want to insert the text. Up to EDIT again and PASTE automagically is now black. ;)

When you want to delete anything you have several choices:
Use the backspace key - this will delete the character to the left of the cursor.
Use the delete key - this will delete the character to the right of the cursor.
For big chunks of text you can go via:
The freeway - select the text and press the delete key with a flourish.
The scenic route - select the text, wander on up to EDIT, mosey on down to DELETE and stop for a cup of coffee somewhere.

That is for sure, I am finding that out. I used Netscape a long time.

I am not doing something right on the x and v ( like copy and paste) how do I do that. I tried to get the information on Explorer but none came up on how to do that. Thanks again. Patti

Great, my problem solved. the copy, paste, was not dark till I did hi-lighting,
I will just stick to this, LOL, I guess I am one good for the saying, "Never to old to teach an old dog new tricks." Have several more with Explorer that I have tried to figure out but I think this old dog needs to get her zzzzzzz's refresh her brain for oh, oh, it is already today. Night everyone and thanks again. I'm not sure about all the contol stuff, but here's how I do it:

I hold my left mouse key down and slide it over what I want highlighted and then let up. I point the arrow at the highlighted line or whatever is highlighted and right click on it. A box drops down and you can copy, paste, delete or whatever you want to do.

I find the less steps I have to do is easiest. I use my mouse for most anything instead of hitting the keys.

I confess to hating "change". I went from Netscape to Exployer....hated it for the longest time. :rolleyes: Finally got used to Exployer...now I don't even remember what I liked so much about Netscape. ;)

Wow, just did all that , glad I asked this on YT you all have :mademyday in less stress on the change over to Explorer I am so glad I asked you all here, I made yahoo email my home page, but now I think it should have been YT, as this is the first place I go when turning on my computer sooooo in saying that, I will go read our emails. Oh, I just learned another way, hi-light whatever I didn't want to type, hit the backspace once, whammy it is deleted. Gosh maybe a computer class would be great after all, that could be a suggestion to YT for a forum. Do you think that is a good suggestion? :wavey: Have a nice day evryone. Patti

Me too, actually, but you can never be sure how someone you don't know uses their computer or whether they find it difficult to use a mouse, keyboard, onscreen keyboard, possum (head mounted pointing stick) are blind, visually impaired... etc... etc. That's the old web designer in me sneaking out again and I'm supposed to be retired :(

The kind gentlemen at Microsoft have built in so many options and several ways to do each task, so that their software can be used successfully by as many people as possible - bless them. :angel:

I covered just a couple of ways above and still produced a humonguously long message. :rollingey

That was very nice of your son.:) I got the Sony Vaio 710 about a year ago,
I'm still learning how to use it. All I really care about it getting on YT and my e-mail. Our boys can do all kinds of things on it, me, I'm lost.:confused: :confused: :confused:

Thanks Lorrie, I am so glad I posted here, I definately can see I have been taking the scenic route far too long. It is good to keep the brain active in learning, gonna stick with the explorer. Son said that Micro Soft does patches automatically to the computer, is that what the icon NVIDIA SETTING is far? Yeppers thats me too. My old pal was a Sony Vio which we got ten years ago, it may have been old but it was great never a lick of problem never a repair. Jack now has the Sony to do his games on :) What is your thought on suggesting to Admin. to have a forum for computer help ? Patti

Sorry to shout. That's your graphics processor. It makes your screen work - do not mess, until you understand it, for fear of having to visit YT "in the dark" ;)

The Microsoft Updates download themselves onto your computer when you are online sometimes, but they do not automatically install at that time. When you come to close down the computer after they have downloaded you *should* be given the option (on the turn-off button) to install now or automatically when you next start the computer up. Choice is yours - makes no difference - you will get the updates anyhooooo!

THANK YOU so glad I didn't touch it, wow. Golly wish it wasn't in the icon bar. I am open for any opinions on help with the computer, if Admin. were to get a new forum going. I have no problem with what others strong opinions are. You are great at this. Thanks for posting back. Hope if the Admin. does put one up that you will be sure to be a great part in contributing to helping those such as myself. Have a nice evening, how is the weather there? If it's bottom right, that is just showing you what applications your computer is running and a few other bits and pieces. Thanks, whew, it is on the right hand side of the bar at the bottom. I don't have anyone here close by to help, and my ISP is not good at helping so I feel like I'm up a creek without a paddle if I do something wrong :( We are in Calif. in the mountains really don't have bad weather to deal with just a shaker now and again (God forbid) the rattlesnakes and cyotes which we have gotten use to living amongst. Just leave em be and they are happy so are we.
