Can a vent a bit? Okay, I would like to take this one opportunity to use YT at an outlet to vent. My job/family is driving me insane! My little brother and I work for my parents and I admit, working for Mom and Dad has its advantages but for the most part it is incredibly stressful and personal. People tell me that we are a very “angry” family, that at any given time, one of us is marching around in a black cloud. Okay, so we are hot headed. Things have just been too much. An employee has stolen over $1000 from the shop over the course of a few weeks and the stress has been mounting. Today my Mom exploded on me and said it was my fault for not having my office more secure. She then left for Chama; she does that when she’s really pissed. My Dad is constantly barking at everyone, (I say barking, because is it yelling if it’s the tone of voice he uses for everything?) and I get the impression he thinks everything I do is wrong. Nothing I do to him has value. He disapproves of everything, and I swear, my life is SO tame. If he is in my office he will literally oversee and instruct me on EVERTHING I do, like I haven’t been doing this for the past four years. I’m serious, even something as simple as using my copier comes with instructions. I know I should be grateful to have such a good job, and work with the people I love. I just feel like I want to scream. |
Scream on...working with family is always very stressful. Sorry that it has to be that way. Sometimes it just way better to work with a complete stranger. |
Hey, You and I should get together for a drink because I here ya sister. I work at a company my dad started. However, he doesn't bark he just doesn't talk & glares at everyone. I don't work directly 4 him, I work for some idiot. I'm constantly micromanaged & man does that irk me. Sorry I don't wanna steal your thread I just wanted to let you know I understand & working for family is not the cushie job everyone thinks it is. PM me if you wanna talk. Nikki |

You need to decide if it's worth it. There may be advantages to working for your family but there are disadvantages too! If it makes you so angry it may not be worth the trouble. Have you thought about looking for another job? Maybe you all just spend tooooo much time together. If you worked somewhere else then the time you spend with them can be family time. Think about it. I couldn't work under those conditions, but only you know if you can continue to do it. Good luck! |
My hubby works for the family business. Boy can I sympathize with you. His sister works 2 hrs a week so she can get a paycheck & benefits!!!! His dad still "Owns the co" His job just yell at everybody. Husband works 80 hrs a week. His brother works 5 minutes from work. (In traffic) He can't start until 11 and has to leave by 3:30.... Doesn't want to get stuck in rush hour traffic.  Like Teri said, some time you have to wonder is it really worth it!!! But in the mean time VENT AWAY!!!!!! |
Thanks for listening, guys. It makes it easier to know other people are doing it…and surviving. Lol. I have really settled into this job and bought a house not far away…if I worked elsewhere it would mean a drive to Albuquerque, that’s about 50 minutes from home. I don’t know what my future holds. My older brother worked here before I did, and he couldn’t take it. Now he works and lives in Alb. We hardly ever see him. But get this; he’s coming back in September to manage  . I don’t see this going well. He’s exactly like my Dad but younger and feistier. And, he doesn’t like Ginger. I get to take her to work with me now. I can’t imagine what he’ll have to say about that.:( |
