Selfhelp books? Hi :) I have a friend in Texas who suffers from low selfesteem and low selfworth. He also has trouble being true to who he is - probably as a result of his low selfworth. Since I am Danish I can't give him advice on selfhelp books that he can read in english to get the process going and I was hoping some of you knew a few great selfhelp books. Please only mention books you have actually read and found useful - thank you very much :) |
I've just read Dr.Laura Schlessinger's "Bad childhood, Good Life" and found it vey eye opening. I didn't expect some of the things in my life to be in there, but they were.I love all her books because she tell it like it is with out coddling you. By the way, I also learned you will NEVER get self esteem from jus reading a book or going to a lecture or waiting for it to knock on your front door. It's slowly achieved by doing, accomplishing, participating, and most important of all, change the degrading, self- defeating tapes in your own head. You and only you can change those constantly running words you keep telling your self. If you just sit there waiting for self esteemit to enter your body with no effert of yourself it will never happen. You have the power, use it. I hope this helps. |
That sounds fantastisc - just what I need - I'll look her books up and send my friend a link :) Thank you! |
I just remembered, isn't Dr. Laura that harsh woman with a radio show who advises women to wuit their jobs to please their men, talks against abortion and homosexuality? If it is her, I don't think she and I have very much common ground. I still think what you say sounds great and will tell my friend that someone on YT recommended the book - that can't be bad :D But I'd like some more suggestions if anyone in here has some :) |
Yes that's her. She absolutely does not say to quit your job to please your husband. She just says to treat your husband with the same respect that you would give your girlfriend or a stranger and show a little more appreciation for what he does do(we're not talking about abusers, cheaters or or bums). As for the abortion and homosexuality that is partly because of personal opinon and her strong Jewish beliefs. We only know about her views because she's very vocal about them. I bet if you had a very frank and honest conversation with your friends. co-workers, and even your family about these very subjects you would have the very same heated and completely opposite views than they also have. You probably would'nt like what you hear.I don't always agree with her 100% on these subjects, I just chalk those up to personal beliefs. But back to the subject at hand, the above mentioned book is very good if you have a tuff time with adulthood because of childhood abuse, neglectful parents, alcholic parents, verbal abuse and all the other garbage that happened and how to cope now and not let it effect the rest of your life. Please don't dissmiss the book because of personal differences of opinion. What do you have to lose, but a few hours of time. |

Some say Frank Sinatra has mafia connections, but that doesn't hold me from listening to his great songs :) For me it's the same - you can be an idiot as a person and still perfom great things....and you can be a wonderful person and perform really crappy stuff - human diversity :) |
I like anything form Iyanla VanZant. I'm not sure if I got the spelling right. I actually like Dr. Phil's books too. It all pretty much common sense, but sometimes it's better to get a different perspective.:) I hope this helps your friend. |
