What does it take to be a Realtor? Is anyone here a realtor? Just curious what the requirements are and if it is a successful career?? :) |
My sister in law is a realtor and she makes about $200,000 a year doing it. But she had to go to school and she said it was really hard and learning comes easy to her. But now she has a good paying job. But the other downfall is she's gone most evenings and week-ends showing homes. She works her tail end off for that money..But she loves it and wouldn't do anything else..well she would she's a workaholic lol.. |
After high school not sure what I wanted to do,, college or what... so I took the real estate classes, and took the test and passed! Surprised me, cause all these " Adults" were telling me how hard it was and they failed, etc. And I passed, It is very expensive to get started in, all the fees, and advertising things you need, I was gonna need about 2,000 to just get what I needed, plus then ( dont know abt know) a Broker had to sponser you to be able to take the test, saying you would work there. I worked for him about 1 year in the office, since I knew how it worked.. But in my area there are SO many realtors it is just cut throat,,so I opted not to further my Real Estate license and let it expire. Good Luck, it's exciting, but long hours,(nights and weekends) and and a lot of work, but a lot of money to be made, if ya work at it. |
As a mortgage broker, I work with a lot of realtors Oh my goodness, I would NOT want that job no WAY!! Like everyone has stated so far, you have to be at the beck and call of the buyer, and trot their fannies everywhere when it is convinient to THEM! And then when you least expect it, they switch companies on you! (Unless you tie them up with legalities and papers). I have some really good friends who are full time realtors, and yes they do love their jobs, but yes they are exhausted by it. If you're thinking it's an easy money opportunity, think again. And there are liabilities involved as well. I think you are right to begin your research by asking this question, but you should research a LOT more before you make your final decision. Good luck! :p |
And not to mention my sister in laws phone rings off the hook. She can't get anything done for being on the phone or showing homes. Her job is litterly her life. She is also constantly dealing with upset people because she had to deal with the first hundred on her list for the day. She has to smile even when someone is going off on her never mind it wasn't her fault or nothing she had control over. She has to spend all day in the office and all evening and week-ends showing homes. NOt to mention there is no insurance or any other benefits because you are self employed. NO retirement nothing. She has to put back money for all of this..but like I said she loves what she does.. |
OR all the lookey loo's that call ya and wanna go through houses just cause they are nosey and wanna see in peoples houses. |
interesting... I have always wanted to do this ..but I would back out because like many of you stated... it is not as easy as it seems... plus I eventually want to have kids and be with them at home so that is not a option.. Hubby is in the midst of trying to open up a body shop so I might just help him with that ...I have a JOB right now..but I don't want to make this my life....thanks guys for the reminder... My brother in law is a realtor for a construction Co. & he makes good $$ but u gotta save some of that because when it's slow...well no $$... |
Oh, a Body Shop,, something else I know about.. I work at one,and my Dad has had his own Body shop till a year ago when he retired. The shop I work at now, is where my Dad started working at when he was 16. I don't know if your state is like ours,,but it is SO controlled by the Ins. companies, it is so frustrating.. how they control,, the rates, the parts, where they try to steer their customers to their " preferred shops" Small shops open around here, and the Ins. companies wont use them, and within months they are closed, it's sad, the days of backyard shops and small shops are done,, around here. Anyhow.. Just had to chime in on that too.. ;) |
Thanks, hubby's family owns a big shop...all of the boys have worked there(including hubby) since 10yrs. old.... helping around sweeping .etc until they learned... yes .. I know what you mean... the good thing is he is really good friends and has been doing this for a long time he has contacts with alot of the DRP's... he is also I-Car certified and his employees will all be I-Car certified so he can have a I-Car Gold shop....which will help alot with the "ins. guys" he already has Safe-Co , State Farm, & Nation Wide in the bank.... so that will help out to start...... |
I am a realtor, it is a lot of hard work , dedication and can be very stressful. It has its highs and lows. I will not kid you. When its good its great.... We are in a different market now a normalized one. If you have any questions pm me, and I will answer your concerns.. PS To answer your questions you have to take a class depending what state you live in they have different set hours. After your classes you have to pass the course and then go take the State test, which consists of what you learned in the classes. I would imagine every state is different. Gina |
here you have to take one class, one licensing class and then take one test. My dad owns a real estate business on top of his "real" job. He makes some decent side income doing it. He only sells for friends and other referrals. |
