Would you move from a House to a Townhome?
 

How many of you would move from your house to a town home? I am weighing out my options... I am in a 2/1/1 home but there is a 2/2/1 townhome that caught my attention... this townhome also has a pretty big outside.. and the whole townhome is gated not to mention it is tiled all throughout upstairs and down.....

** My reason for wanting to move is that I have carpet pretty much through the whole house except kitchen & bath & well I think it would be easier to mop up accidents vs. steam clean them when they do happen?

Oh and the benfit of a free maintenance on the yard is a perk!LOL :D

So what would you do?????

Is it in the same area?? Would you have an association fee in the townhome?? I know that all of the townhomes/condos around me have association fees which means that it's not really "free" maintenance.. I know that in associations they also have the right to tell you certain things which hubby and I would never go for.. Like what color to paint your house, what you can park in the front yrad and such.. We keep our house nice, but don't want someone to be in charge of how and when we do it..

I personally would never go to a townhome. That's just not me.. I don't like having my neighbors on top of me, so to speak. Everyone is different and that may not bother you, but it's something to think of.. IMO

Hmmm, well if you're family can fit, then I guess it would be OK.
There's no way we could do it. We have 7 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and 5 kids,
so Townhomes wouldn't work for us. But I love the free maintenance on the yard
idea! ;) ;) ;) ;)

I would weigh the Pros and cons of each and then decide. Like freedom vs association rules, future value of each, maintenance vs no maintenance, association fees vs maybe getting someone to mow your lawn,neighbors being right on top of you if you don't like them etc. If I were alone I would go into a townhome or condo. I moved from a house to a townhouse and I love it. My house was much bigger, but I like the idea of not having to maintain the property. I like the fact that it is a gated community and we can use the facilities within the community.

I myself have also been weighing the differance in a town house vs the house I have now,I live on a private street,and have a homeowners assoc too.but I also have all of the yard work too, but if I leave on vacation,no one waters or does anything else,in a townhome,its a turn key,you walk out,go on vacation,and everything is taken care of,but now to find one that has an area for the yorkies,sence I really don't take time to walk them just to go potty,I love the doggy door to the back yard,but also would love a pool to bake in the sun,but if I can't find one that fits every want and need, then I will hire a gardner :aimeeyork

I guess it would all depend on fees associated and if you were getting way more for the money.

I like owning my house and not really having to answer to anyone but me, myself and I. I can see the perks of no outside maintenance but honestly is it worth them maybe being able to tell you no pets or no more pets and how to keep up the place.

Hey mustangbee...with all those kiddies girl you can be maintenance free too. Wow that must be a really nice and big house. I am contemplating selling my house in NY and moving to Texas to get a much bigger house and more for the kids. But more house means way more work and I haven't trained the kids all that well yet...lol.

Well no association fees.... I rent a home (only because I am not sure if I want to live here forever) and I will be leasing this townhome as well... It is in a community of townhomes... the one I am looking at is in a 4 plex.... nobody is on top as it is a 2 story townhome.... just a next door neighbor.. it is only hubby & I and my two lil yorkies... pet deposit is only $100 for both! Which is really good!!! Just scared I guess to move again..... hmmmmmmmmm

It's a very scary thing to move. I mean if it works out better financially and you get more room then go for it.

I am slowly easing over my decision whether or not to move to TX...DH is amped but I am not so sure being as it will only be us moving out that way if we do.

We say all of the time that we should have bought a townhouse. We are so not "yard work" people. It was fine when the kids were little and we had the swing set and the sandbox. Now, no one goes in to the back yard anymore. It would be so nice to have a new townhouse where someone else keeps up the outside!

LOL.. well as far as cost goes... leasing this townhome is only $15 more than what I pay now a month... plus I get the 1st month free..(only because right now they are building so many of this everywhere it's something of a competition.....good for me huh!!LOL)... I have lived in a townhome before ...but I don't remember if the electricity was cheaper before (well with the gas prices going up & all).. so that is my big worry?????? Plus if I do move I need to pack like NOW!! The 1st is next Monday AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

P>S Hubby says whatever I want as long as I'm happy..well that doesn;t help much does it!

P.P.S My mom thinks it's better in a house but she loves yard work.. I get in my moods to love it at times... and plus no kids now and I usually for the most part never have anyone over so.....????????

I currently rent a 2 story townhome. The only reason I'm still there is becaue I don't feel like moving into another rental and I haven't found a house in my price range that is screaming, "buy me!" I like the part about not having people that live above me. I am also on an end unit so I only have people that live beside me. The problem I have with renting a townhome (or an apartment) is that if you are fortunate to find a community that accepts pets, there are many people around you that also have pets and are often inconsiderate pet owners. People don't pick up after their pets, they leave them run off-leash (dogs and cats) which I don't necessarily have a problem with however, if they are off-leash and keep terrorizing my babies on a daily basis, I get a bit annoyed. Especially when the terms of the pet agreement are clearly violated constantly and nothing is done about it. Not having to maintain the property is certainly a great thing however, after living where I currently do, I am looking forward to having a yard of my own--even though i HATE yard work :)

You're leasing this townhouse but will you have the option to buy in the future?

I grew up in a house with a 1/4 acare lot (considered to be huge in our neighborhood). The yard? What yard? It's dirt and grass all over! Don't get me wrong, I love the house but it was pretty old: over 50 years.

Just recently, I bought a single-family house (with my parents) also in a newly planted community. I gotta tell you, I love it! Everything is modern, up-to-date so we don't have to worry about house-problems. The neighborhood looks nice because the gardeners would come and trim the places but they're paid through our Home Owner Association fees.

I'd say, find out if you had the option to purchase the place in the future. If you could, move in!

I'm not looking to buy yet... only because I am not sure if I want to stay in this area for life..... but for the moment this is where my job for now....

I lived in a townhouse for a couple of months when we sold our last house. I think renting one is good - but buying can have more downsides. These are the things we realised:
-if it's a shared driveway becareful on who pays for what
-your neighbours value directly affects your home's value because they are attached (even more so than single family homes)
-when you want to improve the outside of your home it can be difficult to coordinate with the neighbours
-you can often still hear your neighbours even with good sound proofing

Just our opinions though.

My son is in a townhouse. He is in the process of selling it. the neighbors are a big problem. that is the only down side he has mentioned to me.

you are not going to be moving away from granny are you? :(

Hmmmmmmm, just read this post and when you say no kids, now does that
mean you are planning to have children? If so, and if it was me, I definately would stay in the home. I don't neccessarily love yard work and all the up keep that I have to do, but I will admit it keeps me in shape and physically is good for me. I watched my in-laws go down hill after they moved into a town house. Dad just gave up and all he did was sit and watch tv, the remote became his excercise. I don't know your ages but if you are young ,healthy
and can keep up the household chores in owning a home, IMO it would be
easier just to replace the carpet with other, and even redo the yard to make it easier maintenance. I have all to do here cause my husband has progressive parkinsons. Weed wacking is the worst part for me as I have a lot of it to do, am talking about lots on the surrounding area as we live at the edge of a forest, I take a deep breath and ask God to help me get it done, what a team we are, we get a lot done together and in a hurry does he ever push :) wow, I couldn't do it without him. I am nearing 70 years of age, so am not a spring chicken but think the physical work don't really hurt me any :) Well, best to you in what ever you decide to do. No, I definately wouldn't to do that either, Well, since you don't have to sell and are wanting to give it a try, you might like a town home, if you don't, you can always move back into another house.

I have spent the last three years in a three story town house.... And I am so happy to have everything on one level again!!!!!

I fell down the stairs twice! Once breaking my Butt Bone :( Don't laugh! It really hurt! And to this day I can't sit through a movie! I'm that darn woman in front of you that won't sit still! lol

My daughter has fallen three times and Brian has only taken one mis-step and only slightly sprained his ankle.... And I don't even need to tell you how hard it is to get furniture in and out of the upper levels!!!

I think they are so cool looking and romantic... very fun! But there is no way you could get me back in to one ever again! No way!

But thats just me... and I'm 31.... so I'm young and fun... right??? well, this young and fun 31 would rather be safe and sound on the first floor!!!
