How often is your daughter feeding her fish? She might be feeding too much or too often. Too much food left in the tank causes amonia....it makes the water cloudy and the tank will stink really bad. The back of the bottle usually recommends too many feedings. (That way the sell more :) ). Feed the fish just once a day...no more than what the fish will eat in a minute or two is fine. You've got alot of good advice here...hope it helps. |

We had 2 huge gold fish in a 5 gal tank and I just upgraded to a 10 gal a few weeks ago for the kit at wal-mart it was $30 I also got 2 algae eaters for the tank. It started getting algae just a couple of weeks after I got it and it took them 2 days to clean that sucker up. I would also have some type of scrubber pad especially for algae to help. |
It sounds crazy, but the bigger the tank, the easier it is to keep clean. Gold fish are the worst offenders for leaving lots of mess and should only feed them the size of their eye every day. (that's a good way to measure) They don't need alot of food....the excess food in the tank will cause lots of algae and make more work for mom! :) There are other cold water fish out there that are just as easy to care for and are alot cleaner than goldfish. I believe we had zebras for a while in our smaller tank. (I don't think you mentioned you have a heated tank?) That is alot of fish to have in that small tank.... I think someone already mentioned that it's one inch of fish per gallon of water (or one fish per gallon). If you do end up getting a larger tank down the road (don't let this one discourage you because the small ones are alot of work), guppies are fun for the kids to raise. We raised them for a few years and my kids just loved watching the little ones being born. It was quite educational!! lol They were able to see the whole cycle of life in one tank....it sure made for some interesting questions! |

YOu might want to get a larger tank becasue a 5 gallon should probobly olnly have 1 fish in it. Your going to keep having a dirty tank with that many goldfish in the small of a tank. I'd at least put them in a 10 gallon tank. Goldfish really are the dirtiest fish. I have a 60 gallon freshwater tank and a 20 gallon saltwater tank :) Algae is almost inevitable in a freshwater tank. I have fish that eat algae and I still have a lot of it. |
