Roses & Aphids Any advice on how to manage aphid control? I'm caring for roses for the first time in my life. I pruned them when I was supposed to, fed them, etc., and I had my first rose last week. Well, I also found a whole army of aphids on my rose bushes! Anyone know of any tricks or secrets to keeping aphids away? |
You can buy a soap formula insecticide for aphids at Home Depot or Lowe's. It doesn't hurt the plant. Or you can make your own by mixing a little Ivory dish detergent, water and spraying the plant. I use that on hibisics (sp) and it works well. You want to kill the aphids because they will eventually kill the plant because the leaves fall off. My dad use to put severn dust on his roses....not very pretty but it works. |
:idontknow I have a friend who put Vasiline on the trunks of her fruit trees to stop the ants. Who knows it might work. I have no idea, I plant silk plants around my house. Everyone who knows me knows I grow plants the same way I cook, so I gave up years ago!!! |

Make up some dishwashing liquid and water and spray those little critters , you can also plant some marigold flowers next to them it seems to keep the aphids away best of luck. |
I know that lady bugs LOVE aphids. I just about kill everything I try to grow but I heard about the lady bugs from a gardener. |
Thanks for the input everyone! I went out and bought some insecticidal soap. It actually smells very nice. I sprayed them on the rose bushes, and wouldn't you know it, it started to rain ten minutes later. |

BUT I did not hear it from a gardener... I was watching "Stanley" on the Disney channel with my daughter this weekend and the show was about his dad's prize winning rose bush being destroyed by aphids and the kids learned about the different types of Ladybugs and how they love to eat aphids... it was a cute show!!!! They ended up getting some ladybugs and put them in his dad's garden and they ate them right up... My mom said that you can actually buy Ladybugs from Garden supply stores. |
been there I had the same problem with my climber rose bush. it was covered in aphids! someone in one of my design classes, who was an avid gardner, gave me a completely natural, successful solution. ~PLANT GARLIC BULBS IN THE GROUND NEXT TO THE ROSES~ I happened to have a sprouting garlic bulb in the fridge. (i know, gross.) I planted it and never saw another aphid on that bush. No harsh chemicals, no need for marigolds....... :) |
