Computer Question While having my morning cup of coffee in the office yesterday, I spilled coffee on my work lap top. I ran to the bathroom to get some paper towels and got it all off (or so I thought)- I even went under the keys. However, my backspace bar was acting like a space bar yesterday and now my space bar randomly works/doesn't work. Will this work itself out eventually? I'm just hoping that something has to dry and it will be all better. My college room mate spilled a drink all over her desktop keyboard and that turned out fine, so I'm hoping mine will be too. One last question... if it doesn't fix itself, will my "I have no idea what happended to it" story work or will I have to fess up to the coffee mess? Ugghh... I swear- I'm leaving a good 6 inches between my coffee cup and my computer from now on! |
Honesty is always the best policy unless, of course, the lie sounds better. LOL My dil spilled orange juice on hers and it acted wacky for a few days. She used a hair dryer to help dry it out, and eventually it was OK. |
My ex spilled a can of coke on his and it was ruined. You can lie and say you think someone else did it ;) |
Oh no, i really hope it works after it dries completely. Yikes, im not sure if the "I don't know what happened" story will work, i guess it depends if others get to use that laptop also. |
I know my sis spilled her drink in her key board and it never worked right again. |
Ah as someone that works in IT I've seen this more than once. The best course of action is to be honest to your IT dept. Trust me they'll know. I only say that because they can take it apart and try to clean/dry it as well as possible. If you drink your coffee black you may be lucky, the more sugar and cream you use the worse the damage. It also depends on how much liquid got in and depending on the model what components were affected. Mistakes happen, I've never seen anyone fired for spilling, dropping or otherwise unintentionally damage their computer. Good luck :) |
I agree, mistakes happen, and I'm sure you are not the first person. My mom dropped her work cell in the toilet. The office lady wouldn't even touch it, she just ordered my mom a new one. Tell your IT, they will either be able to fix it or replace it. |
LOL, OK sorry to laugh, but thanks to someone on YT, OK a few someones on YT. My computer will never be the same! :yelrotflm I have to clean my screen everyday, more than once!!! And my keyboard???? hmmmmm lets just say I'm really lucky it still works. I don't even keep water by my computer anymore. I hope yours is OK, but for now, maybe you should think about keeping your coffee 6 feet away, 6 inches won't work, trust me. ;) ;) ;) ;) Best of luck!!! :2hearts2: :2hearts2: |
Wow..that was so me about 2 weeks ago..except with a bowl of cereal. Milk A L L O V E R my laptop keyboard..Let's just say I am the proud owner of a new Dell laptop :D I figured by the time I sent my old one in to be fixed and with all of those costs plus shipping, etc. I would be better off to just get a new one.. Good luck! |
Yes, wait for it to dry completely, the good thing is, you can easily replace most keyboards, since that is the only thing that seems broken. Replacement keyboards are actually pretty cheap on eBay if you have a popular laptop like a Dell (if you have to pay for it yourself)... |
If all of the great suggestions that were mentioned do not work. Be honest with your boss. Most of the laptop manufactures offer accidental damage options when you buy the laptop. If your employer is not working with all of the facts, they might now be able to take advantage of it. |

...and, perhaps a small table beside the puter desk for drinks. |
I've learned to keep drinks way far away from my computers. I'm just too much of a clutz... A hair dryer should help to dry it out for you. Good luck! |
Susan - been there done that but what my company does is ship a new shell (this has happened 2X's :p ). I pull out the hard-drive/DVD/Battery and put it into the new shell and everything is back to normal. It is when the hard drive gets liquid into it that you are screwed  . |
